  • ffxi is choppy when playing on windows 7 64-bit

My game is choppy and it happens every split second with graphics set all the way to the lowest possible settings. I have well above the required specs to run the game and have even done a check on my system through nzone.

Now I have tried multiple scenarios that any advanced techie would try. however they have all failed.. please has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have read all the searchable websites that come up in regards to this same issue.

HERE are the nzone results. nZone is detecting I have 4 gb of video memory... however it's a 512 mb card... I also am not sharing any ram with video memory through the bios.. as that option is not even present for my motherboard.

now any good suggestions without changing my OS....

im not the only one with this issue, others have had this issue as well but never posted back on their findings.

It's funny, I have Win7 and have never had a single issue with running FFXI.

Well your using the 64bit version, any driver issues that are hidden? and remember the operating system uses more processing power and memory in 64 bit mode. Maybe check your graphics driver is up to date and direct x to.

Re: ffxi is choppy when playing on windows 7 64-bit

Thank you for the responses. I have updated the drivers even went back and forth between drivers. switched to archived drivers with the same result.. choppy playback.

I've covered everything possible to fix this issue.. in the end directly on the playonline.com website it says to download the viewer for windows 7... I did and come to find out I already had it as playonline updated itself automatically when I loaded it up right after initial installation.

I also read that there are a select few video cards tested for this system and work... and neither of my two video cards are listed... The compatability chart stops at video card geforce 9600 and I have an 9800 as well as a 240.

@TheGrandMom I see that you may have a video card on that compatability chart or may have been lucky to select one supported for FFXI. Can you please share your video card model?

@Jarre my computer exceeds the requirements for Windows 7 as well as FFXI it's an intel I7 860 2.8ghz 8 core processor with 8 gigs of ram, 2 terrabytes HD space, geforce 9800 GTX and a geforce 240 GT(one installed one but currently tested on both video cards at seperate times with an array of drivers.) I can play Mass Effect 2 on full settings with a miniscule amount lag due to the video card. Fallout 3 can be played on full settings with a miniscule amount lag. Direct X was the first thing I updated. However I did notice one thing rather odd... Windows 7 shipped with DX11.. and my computer is using DX10.1 Now I believe this is because my graphics cards are DX10 compatible... I have not looked further into if DX11 compatible cards are required for DX11.. I haven't seen or heard anything about it being required like when the upgrade from DX9 to DX10 came out

I did not completely follow the instructions from playonline though.. it said to completely uninstall and reinstall playonline and FFXI. I only uninstalled the viewer as the install for FFXI would have taken far to long.

But for the fact that Ii already had the latest viewer version then it deregards the steps playonline provides.

The only reason I play using the PC is for the ability to change the graphic settings and screen size.. Now can this be done for the PS3 or I mean PS2 version of the game? If so, how?

Re: ffxi is choppy when playing on windows 7 64-bit

This issue is still present. Support for FFXI is so out their that I received an email back about my question in regards to billing/accountn info.. never did i request this and in response to my choppy video they related it to a network issue... The game is laggy due to hardware issue. The video card compatability list is a bit outdated and ends at the nvidia graphics card before mine. I am a bit pissed off this wont work on my system. Anyone have any solutions? I have no other issues with playing games on this system.

i'll try to reinstall my drivers for my system. After that i'll check the POL system checker to see if it can detect my drivers properly. It's odd that it doens't already check them.

Re: ffxi is choppy when playing on windows 7 64-bit

Here's what I fear, is going to be the end verdict of your situation/problem:

Your taking a space shuttle to a foot race I.E. your computer is in the same relm as mine, and FFXI does not perform on a a level it should be

I usually run around non-crowded zones around 24fps, and win WG around 16-24fps depending on where i'm at, how quickly i'm turning etc. Also this drops in dynamis/einherjar/any event where there's alot of graphic spam from spells/job abilities/etc. I'm on 7(64) also and I haven't found a solution except to use 3rd party programs.

That discusion isn't for these forums though, so If you'd like PM me, and I'll talk you through a process to use them, without "cheating" and improve your gameplay experience

Actually, I run a i7 Quad 3.5 processor, nvidia gx280, 6g ram and I had that problem for a while. I put the shadows on Normal and it fixed it for me.

I can't get playonline to launcg at all. I called tech support and they said it was because I had a multichip processor.

                      This is my machine info:

                      Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.101026-1503)

I have dowloaded the vista/7 version of the viewer and still the same problem. My only hope is that perhaps it has something to do with the servers being down and it cant autoupdate or something. But asside from that, anyone have any advice?

                      Thanks!

either SE support are idiots or they didn't really give that as an explanation. I'm running ffxi on w7 64bit on a dual core phenom and have no problems. I did, however, have to launch with the Final Fantasy XI shortcut and not the playonline one though (or was it the other way around? i forget). Try both and see which one works.

                              Thanks Yyg!
