  • Brand new to ffxi

    Hello everyone,

I have been playing mmo's for the better part of 11years now, ashrons call, daoc, wow and a few others, I never picked up the ff series dont ask me why. Well anyway I play Wow now with a few friends and one of those use to play ff back in the day as he says lol. So after hearing about it for awhile now I have finally broke down and bought the game yesterday only 14.99 ;O) I have been doing quest for a guy near the exit of the city, but now he wants me to go to the next zone and kill one mob, Needless to say that hasnt worked out to well for me I die over and over, and i also found out u can loose levels in this game ;o( So I had a few questions for u vets, Is there trianers in this game where u can learn new spells I still only have the stone spell. Also is there a way to get mana and health baclk? I see it comes back very slowly but killing a few things then having to afk for 10min while mana and health comesw back isnt very fun lol. Seems like this game has a huge learning curve ;o/

    Thank you for your time

You probably need to start reading stuff on the wiki first.

FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more

The lower level spell scrolls are bought from vendors in each starter city. The middle and higher level scrolls may be quested or drop from monsters, or vendors may not sell them depending on your nation and which nation is in first place.

Be sure to equip a weapon and armor (I was level 2 from punching bunnies with my fists before I figured that out), and also use the "check" command on monsters to see how strong they are. The "-" key on the keypad will bring up the main menu.

To regain HP and MP you have to rest (/rest command or "*" key on keypad). You can't rest if something is lowering your HP (such as poison or Dia).

And you don't lose any exp for dying at level 1-3.

Also, because it's so easy to change jobs, in FFXI few people use alt characters (mules) to play as another job. The primary reason is for extra storage, and also to have the ability to visit vendors and sell things on the auction houses of other cities, and as crafting specialists since you can't cap all crafts on one character.

Next time you're in the city, be sure to visit one of the guards near the gates and ask for Signet. It'll do a lot for your experience gain when in low-man parties, and for HP/MP regen and retaining TP while resting in general.

If you're sent out to kill that one enemy, you'll probably find it easier at level nine or higher. People typically travel out there around level eight, but depending on weather and day of the week, the enemies there might have their strength tipped against your favor.

This game has a much higher difficulty than WoW. You will be grinding a lot longer and will have more difficulty soloing so leveling takes a lot longer. Making gil, in order to equip your character with the proper gear and items, takes a good amount of time and is slow going. It is harder to get things accomplished in a short amount of time, unlike WoW. If you have a short amount of time to play, you probably won't get alot accomplished. Most people that have never played FFXI and come from WoW, rarely play this game for more than a few months because of these issues and more.

With that said, good luck to you. I hope you are one of the few that sticks it out. If you do, you'll find the game extremely rewarding and addictive.

Not to mention the defensive bonus you get from Signet.

And be sure to get an Empress Ring. That's worth up to an extra 1000 XP over three hours, every day. The Field Manuals (for Fields of Valor aka FoV) help too, giving you bonus XP for killing a list of monsters. Be sure to get the Refresh if you're a mage job. It's way overpowered at low levels.

And while it's hard work trying to solo, up to level 10 you're basically expected to solo because it doesn't take much time at all for an experienced player. I can get a job from 1 to 7 in about three hours with an Empress ring and FoV, though the next three levels are a bit more work.

also look at my ffix newbie guide XD(shameless self-promotion)

it's probably best to get lvl 10-15+ before trying to do quests. Some of the early story missions were designed this way so it should be ok.

No. The concept of trainers like WoW does not exist. In this game your Abilities (think Taunt) you learn as you level up your job (wow calls jobs 'class'). Spells you must buy from the NPC shops, auction house or find in the loot of dead monsters.

Under full keyboard configuration that is CTRL+H, or you can type /rest. I am not sure how it is under compact keyboard configuration (laptop users seem to prefer this configuration).

As has been suggested by others, many people coming from less grindy MMO find this off putting but I recommend perservering as it is an awesome game with many exciting adventures and journeys to take.

Definatly want to check out the new player guides as there is alot of good information out there.

                    Re: Brand new to ffxi

The best way I found is to fall into a helpful LS (this might be difficult at first) that doesn't mind lending a hand. Vana'diel is huge, so you'll want companions at some point or another. And since you are coming into the game rather late, don't waste any time building up your friends list if you intend to get anywhere in the game while getting any sort of satisfaction/fun out of it.

It sounds like you need a wealth of information, more than anyone can give you on the forums. I'd suggest checking out the Wiki's, and you can always Google FFXI beginner's guides.

And as for the blanket statement tossed around here like beads at Mardi Gras (FFXI has a much higher difficulty than WoW)... that's not entirely true. As someone who came to FFXI from WoW back in Sept/Oct '09 after severals years in Azarath... the grinding exp, making gil, tradeskills, and the like can be seen as "harder to obtain", but not much else.

So if you were doing a lot of the end-game in WoW, you'll have zero issues with FFXI end-game if you make it that far or are interested in it. Fortunately or not, FFXI doesn't have many scenarios where every single person in a large group has to play their class/job near flawlessly to get a win.

Welcome to FFXI !!! It's been awesome thus far for me. Great change from WoW! The key is to stick with it beyond the lower end stuff. As you get into the game, the story lines and cut scene's have, more times than not, been all worth it.

                    Good luck!

I found Wow a lot more easier then FFXI when it come to craft, selling and everything else.

Even bosses are harder. My guild from wow went into nex before the expansions i don't see them as hard as FFXI bosses which is purely by chances. I even lost Royal jelly before with 1 drg 1 rdm in pt... don't ask me how.
