  • Do you think SE will ever stop supporting FFXI on PS2?

I hadn't heard of them saying that it would always be supported, nor had I heard them say anything about ever droping support.

Also 3 years from now, would the servers still be running? and if not would SE sell the rights to run FFXI servers? or something along those lines?

I have nothing against people who play on the PS2 but if you've ever played on PC you have to understand that maintaining ps2 compatability has crippled graphical development of FFXI. I'm just curious to see what others thoughts on this subject are?

I know it's came up in my LS before and 99% of us would rather see it on PC only.

They swore up and down that they would not raise the level cap. As far as I'm concerned, all bets are off.

As long as a significant number of JPs still use PS2, SE won't drop it, because they're close enough to whine in SE's ear.

However, they have sort of started obsoleting it by no longer producing install disks. I hear the 2009 edition sells for some serious bucks on ebay.

yeah in the USA it's super hard to get PS2 installs...even used ones...

In Japan Sony still makes PS2 systems that use the hard drive and SE still prints disks. I think we can count on the PS2 being supported until it gets too hard for the JPs to get stuff....

I wish more people would get in this frame of mind with developers/publishers. They make statements and they contradict those statements whenever they like but yet some people will run around saying shit like "well they said so once and I believe them!". For christs sake go put your big boy pants on...

At this point, I don't see a need to stop supporting the PS2. They've come this far, they might as well see it to the end. BUT they didn't release a PS2 version of the Ultimate Collection and I don't see them releasing any more disc expansions for PS2, except in Japan.

...no they didn't. They did say a few years ago they didn't see raising the level cap as a possibility any time soon. But again, that was a few years ago. SE has never sworn they wouldn't raise the level cap.

            As for the OP:

            No

            Maybe

            That's bs.

Also, with (according to the last census) half the userbase still on PS2s, there's no reason to not support the system.

I read that about half the userbase still on ps2. I believe those numbers are skewed... Atleast...I hope anyway. But that leads me into my next thread, as it's more of an economics question pertaining to FFXI than pertaining to PS2 support...

It's really not that hard to get them. I just Google'd "FFXI for PS2" i think and was a few clicks away from getting all the discs.

It was mega expensive though, compared to the PC version prices.

They'll support it til the end, definitely. They won't be releasing new content for to much longer, and if they lose their PS2 players that time will come even sooner.

I think so long as SE gives a good, strong advance notice that they're phasing out PS2 support, doing so at this point is OK. But it really depends on how much the the userbase is still on PS2, seems in Japan the number is still high enough for support to stay.

I wouldn't expect for graphics and code to be updated of PS2 was dropped, though.

Haven't they already stopped supporting it?

Hell on the actual tech support page, it's listed a PC/360. There's no mention of the PS2 version, and all PS2 products are discontinued last I checked.

Besides anyone with a PS2 old enough to still support the HDD should be SoL by now anyway as they don't have that long a shelf life. Mine gave out after 4 years ; ; (the newer slim models are much more reliable but don't support the HDD so yeah.... and since they cut out the PS3 support too, well, ppl r boned)

My HDD was still functional when I took it out of my PS2, maybe I can find a buyer, heh.

Pretty much.. You can find the Vana'Diel collection, but it goes for way more than it's worth cause they're all on E-bay.

They only make expansions for the Japanese PS2's. The Ultimate Collection was only released for PC and 360 in other areas. I highly doubt that we'll see anymore disc expansions released for NA PS2's.

Yep don't bother trying to resell it unless you have one new in the box or have the box and documentation for it. Only collectors are picking them up. Tsk Tsk Tsk Pwn, never throw away video game stuff!

I play FFXI on my PS2 and it still runs... somewhat fine. Just cant play PS1 games. I really wish they wouldn't stop supporting it though as my 360 died and traded it in for a PS3 and my computer sucks atm.
