I ask the question because in a vanilla system where you are using basic drivers for your vga/ethernet/sound (by basic drivers I mean xp cd drivers), you should be able to boot your external drive w/ xp just as you would a linux drive, right?
Wrong, the OS would see that it's in a different machine and give you a few days to validate. If you didn't, it would proceed to lock up until you did so. I had the same thing happen when I pulled my boot drive from my old computer and put it in my new one, so I could have some functionality until I set everything up.
I really hate to reuse images that I've already used once during the week, but:
Now I haven't been around the site for a long time, but I know that if you don't join in with Feba or Mhurron they'll eventually leave you alone. Seriously though, coming in here with that IT Analyst title and then asking a question that could've easily been googled was asking for trouble . Why do you even want FFXI/Windows on a portable hard drive anyways?

I can't remember, is this feature in Vista and 7 onry or was it added to XP with an update/Service Pack? Either way there are builds of XP that do not have this, so that can be eliminated.

I think you're jealous of people who actually work in the IT field for a living and can support themselves from it. It's ok Mhurron, since you talk about MCSE's and bootcamps, it shouldn't surprise me that these are all you probably amounted to and never got past the big stuff...self-proclaimed IT wiz you are, congrats!
Well shit then, I better go and quit my job here, a guy who doesn't know anything about what he uses told me I don't do it. Better move out of the house then too, I can't support myself on the job I apparently don't do. Shit, I have to give this laptop back too, imagine them taking imaginary money since I must not have any because I can't support myself on the job I don't do. It's going to be tough to give the grocery store all that food back.
Thank god the world has IT Analysts that don't understand the first thing about what they supposedly analyze to keep stuff running. What ever would we do without them?
Why don't you try and come up with a plausible reason as to how you can be an IT Analyst and not understand how the registry or dynamic linking works, or to put it another way, how you can completely fail to understand how windows works.

Only OEM and volume licensed builds bypass activation. For OEM builds, it is illegal (against the EULA) to install those on anything other then the machine it shipped with. Obviously, if you don't own the volume license, you have no right to the volume license builds. Retail releases of XP all included activation, and have since the public beta.
Question's answered, let's move to the next topic.
Open advice for Zoltar: I'd take that "I.T. Analyst" off your description if you don't want to continue to be get called out on it. Whether or not you make your living doing what you claim is of no interest to me, but if you want people to treat you with respect, you should at least try not to offend them by questioning their sanity.
P.S. I'm also an IT pro - in my case, a database design consultant - and I'd have reacted the same way as Feba and Mhurron to your question. It was elementary and unbecoming for anyone who claims to know anything about computing.
