FFXI on external HHD

hi just wondering if i do the digital download can i install FFXI to my external HHD, and play it on different computers?

No. You can install it to an external drive, but you can not just take that and run it on multiple computers.

Mind if I ask the question then if you install the anniversary collection (or any collection) onto an external drive, including the POL viewer, can you plug and play?

EDIT: You know what, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he meant ripping the anniversary collection ISO onto an external drive, plugging that in, virtually mounting it, installing, and then playing.

Ok, I'll clarify. If I take my Anniversary Collection, and install it AGAIN, this time on an external hard drive. This includes POL viewer, FFXI + Updates. That said, I take this hard drive to another computer, say at my friend's house. I plug in this hard drive, and launch FFXI directly from this hard drive.

Where is my point of failure?

You're supposedly the IT pro. Use that grey matter and that MCSE and figure it out. I'm dreaming? You're the one who doesn't understand fundamental parts of the OS you're using.

I'll even give you a hint - Why do even simple windows apps REQUIRE an installer.

Oh, and you didn't need to clarify earlier for me, I knew exactly what you were asking. It was Feba who decided to be nice instead of just realizing you don't know what you're doing.

Installing an application to an external drive, and then taking that drive to a different computer may work for simpler applications, but setting up a complex application is as much about setting up the Windows registry as it is about just placing files. The registry will have only been set up on the first machine. Theoretically it might be possible to set up the software on machine A, then set it up again on machine B if the drive letters are identical, but I'd expect that to be highly error prone. It's also quite possibly against many applications licenses or terms of use since you're technically installing it on two machines.
