    Can't figure this out..

    I downloaded the 14 day trial.. aaand this is the first time I have played XI on a PC and I can't figure out the controls for the life of me. I have a PC copy of WoTG and I looked at the manual and it won't work.

    8, 2, 4, and 6 move you, but when I do that, it just types it into the say chat. I almost broke this laptop over my knee I swear.

    Did you try to go into the config and change it? Num Lock Key?

      Compact keyboard layout.
      I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

        First time I logged in I couldn't figure out how to move my character. Later I changed to compact keyboard layout and I've never looked back.

          Dude no lol. Everything I press doesn't do anything.. If it doesn't type, it just does nothing.

          How do I change it to compact keyboard?

            You need to find the key that opens the menu first. I think it's the - key but I don't know for sure since I haven't used the full keyboard layout since I figured out how to change it.

                Well.. yeah I only pressed that about a thousand times.. It just keeps entering the Say chat and typing the - ..

                  Does your laptop have a numpad? If so did you try both of the - keys?

                  If all else fails you can always go through every key systematically until you find what you need.

                    No I am on a laptop.. I've tried that too. I've held ctrl, tab, alt and went through every key.

                        I had to hit ctrl and the - at the exact same time instead of holding ctrl then hitting -.

                          You can try the compact KB settings or just forget the KB controls altogether! I find that FFXI has one of the worst KB and mouse control schemes so I never use it myself. The first edition of FFXI was a PS2 game and I find it works best with a PS2-style or similar controller.(also I hear the Xbox360 controller for windows ain't bad either)

                          I always recommend that players get a controller and configure it to FFXI...since it works so much better than running around with the darn numberpad and moving the camera with the arrow keys!

                            If you have a num pad, the full keyboard is much more accessible than a PS2 controller. Well, that's what I've found over the years anyway.

                              All I know is that I've been playing it on the PS3 and it sucks because whenever I want to say something it takes 10 minutes to type it out with the in-game keyboard. My character is really easy to control with the PS3 controller but since this is such a socially-oriented game I think not having a keyboard is a huge detriment.
