game continues to crash and dont know why

When i start FFXI it completly shuts down my computer without warning and i don't know why, it doesn't restart the comp or anything of the sort. I have re-installed the game twice and i have ran virus checker numerous times.

Can someone help me out with this problem?

Well first off, you'll need to give MUCH more detail than that. When you go to the doctor and say I have a pain in my stomach, he can't just tell you what it is by that. He asks you a lot of questions and then makes a good guess at what it could be. So......

What are your computer specs?

What OS do you run on your computer?

Did you fully install the game or is this happening during installation?

If this is happening during installation, describe what happens. Like how far into installation do you get?

Does this happen during any other applications on the computer? Try running multiple applications and tax your system and see if this happens then too.

Have you changed any of the hardware in your computer recently?

its a Compaq Presario c700
Processor- Intel(R) Pentium(R)DUAL CPU T2370 @ 1.73 GHZ 1.73 GHZ
RAM- 1.00 GB
System Type- 32-bit operating system
runs windows vista, there was no faliures when installing and have it installed on my computer. the only time it shuts my comp down is when im playing final fantasy and no i havent changed any hardware and the shutting down didnt happen till recently. If you need anything else answered be free to ask.

You'd know if you installed it since you have to download it from the Playonline website.

Did you download the VISTA patch from SE before you installed the game?

It's not required to download the POL Viewer for Vista if you bought the FFXI: Ultimate Collection.

IIRC, the game would't crash on Vista using the original POL client, it just wouldn't launch at all.

To the OP: Why don't you ask Vista itself what is wrong?

also....get some more RAM -.- good lord I notice this alot with the Dell systems I work on... when someone has Vista, and only 1 GB of RAM, get atleast another 1 GB or 2 would be better

but anyway.... your saying when you launch POL the system shuts itself down, or when it goes from POL to FFXI? I just want to clarify this bit of info, because it is important.

if its POL itself, right click on the icon, go to properties, then compatibility tab,
and check the following
Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition
Disable display scaling on high DPI settings
Run this program as an administrator

if it still shuts your system down after doing this, you need to see if it does it with any other games
and then start checking your hardware itself.

Actually it only shuts my computer down when im playing the game itself and its a random time it could be 5 min once i start the game or and hour.

Try disabling infrared devices in the device manager. This has been known to cause crashes, and has solved the problem for many people. I had a similar crashing issue myself, but nothing I was able to do fixed it, so it was just something I had to deal with, especially in certain zones (which I later ended up avoiding entirely).

If you're in Vista try playing it in Windowed mode or install Windower. That solved a hell of a lot of my Vista-related crashes while playing.

Also update your graphics card drivers (run Windows Update if you aren't computer savvy enough to find them yourself. It will do it for you ), out of date drivers can sometimes cause random crashes.

i have a similar problem with 3 computers.. took a few days but figured out the issue..

graphics card.

one the fan was going out allowing the graphics card to overheat and computer would shut completely down.. no error out, notice or anything just complete shutdown.. would start back up fine even immediately after a shutdown.. replaced card never had a problem again.

other one the housing was clogged limiting airflow to the card causing card to overheat and shut down..

also happens to a laptop i own i had to take off the card cover and prop the back up to allow more air underneath it. only does it when playing ff any other time laptop runs fine. also bought a small desk fan to force airflow underneath it when playin on laptop.

happens easily on computers inside a computer desk since the computer desks usually cut down on any airflow around a system.. worse on graphics cards with no fans..

easy test.. move computer away from any walls blow dust outta everything.. and take the side housing off (to allow unrestricted airflow). play the game see if it shuts down again.

Thank you all for the advice and help givin, and the conclusion to all this is over heating since i have downloaded every driver possible for update and still crashed. it started crashing in window mode so went back to full screen mode. and every time i boot up FFXI my laptop would get really hot but would run fine any other time i didnt play so i beleive it over heating. I did earlier today try to remove some panals from the bottom and that didnt seem to help... so if any advice on cooling the laptop down will be appreciated and ill try the fan thing
