FFXI now on steam

FINAL FANTASY XI ULTIMATE COLLECTION on Steam

I currently have my game cancelled due to me taking a break but I do plan on coming back after I move which will be Feb so prolly rejoin then or March. Anyway, does anyone know about the steam version at all? I don't own shantotto add on yet, so if I bought this would that give it to my account that already exists? Also does this keep the game updated or do we have to use the normal POL method? (I guess this will be impossible to tell until there's an update)

I just got it myself. It'll give you a single universal code to use for everything, whether a new player or a current one (it'll simply activate anything that you haven't gotten yet, such as the three add-on campaigns). If you have FF XI and POL already installed, you'll need to uninstall them before installing the Steam version since Steam puts it in its own directory structure, not the subdirectories normally used by POL/FF XI. Oh, we are talking about a 9+ GB download folks...

Just as you would launch POL/FF XI through Steam, you'll also be accessing the config programs through Steam. You'll be given the option to run them whenever you launch POL/FF XI in Steam, but you also can right click on the FF XI listing in your Steam games list as well if you prefer.

It's a little soon to tell if Steam will be handling your updates of if you still have to go through POL, but I have noted that Steam's now showing some pre-loaded content for FF XI, though it's not clear what exactly it is. I suppose we'll have to wait until the next update later this month to find out for sure.

One thing the Steam version brings is access to the Steam interface & community while in-game (simply hit shift-tab like any other Steam game). It even works in full-screen mode.

I'm sure other aspects will come out over time.
