  • Rambler's Gaiters

I'm wondering if it's actually worth my time to track these down.

I'm currently a level 34 Red Mage(subbing Black Mage) and these would clearly be a step up from my generic 4 defense footwear, but I'm not sure how long the Rambler's Gaiters would actually remain useful to me. Is there some new footwear that I should be looking at instead that will serve me better and last longer or should I just spend a few days hunting these down?

They are balling, and actually, your at the level where you can solo for decent exp, with FoV, in that area. Highly recommend it, After i got my herder's I farmed them for some time, until I gave up, because my level had well surpased that item. But yeah, if you got some time, hunt em down. (reccomend waiting until mystery box's : can't remember that region) is active.

That's what I needed to hear. I've now got a goal for the next few days, just hope they don't take too long to drop.

Is there anything I should know about making farming for chests easier? I'd heard Thieves can lockpick them, but my Thief is only level 18 so I don't think I'll be taking it to Rolanberry Fields any time soon.

Day 1: Spent entire night killing things in Rolanberry Fields, 0/5 on chests. This is gonna be a long and painful process.

Day 2: Spent most of the night killing things in Rolanberry Fields. 0/2 on chests. Cumulative headache: 0/7 after two days.

Day 3: Detoured to Bastok for a short quest, spent the remainder of the night killing things looking for Gaiters. Cumulative headache: 0/11 after 3 days.

Day 4: Accidentally leveled, decided to skillup on the occasional Ochu. Cumulative headache: 0/13

Day 5: Spent a few hours trying to help a person camp the Valkurm Emperor, didn't show. Remainder of night spent in Rolanberry. Doubts begin forming as to whether or not the effort is worth the reward. Cumulative headache: 0/14

Day 6: Hope is kept alive with chests being dropped nearly back to back early in the night, but the flow quickly dwindles. Still, a decent haul given some previous nights. Cumulative headache: 0/19

Day 7: And on the seventh day he got distracted by shiny things dangling in front of him, namely Convert and Refresh. Cumulative headache: 0/22

Day 8: Took day off to level Black Mage sub.

Day 9: Became convinced the game is taunting me. Unlocked Wurger in Pashhow Marshlands while farming. I can't even equip the thing but I'll hang onto it. Unexpected success there sent me back to Rolanberry to find another two dud chests. Cumulative headache: 0/24

Day 10: Spent the night doing drive-by Raises and spending all my gil on Phalanx. Went back to Rolanberry to farm for gil and boots. Cumulative headache: 0/27

Day 11: Slow night of farming. Disbelief, six chests even though I logged out early. Cumulative headache: 0/33

Day 12: Escaped from Rolanberry to Pashhow Marshlands. Spent the night fighting off Invasive Tarus.

Day 13-14: Farming/housekeeping, not in Rolanberry.

Day 15: Back to Rolanberry, better drop rate than usual but still no gaiters. Cumulative headache: 0/39

Day 16: Discovered that Quadavs are very protective of bees in Rolanberry. Cumulative headache: 0/41

Day 17: It's a good thing I need to farm to upgrade other gear or I might have given up on these a while ago. Cumulative headache: 0/46

Day 18: Took a break, unlocked Dragoon. Came back to Rolanberry. *sob* Cumulative headache: 0/50

Day 19: Lost in Rolanberry, farming for boots and gil for upgrades. Cumulative headache: 0/53

Day 20-22: Lost laptop, didn't feel like windowing for Elwynn's web thingy tonight. Ran away to Bastok to work on leveling white mage sub.

Day 23: Dammit, Mystery Boxes: Bastok is up today. Back to Rolanberry for a whopping 15 chests that don't have the Gaiters. Cumulative headache: 0/68

Day 24: Slow night of old radio dramas and farming. Cumulative headache: 0/77

Day 25: This is becoming an exercise in masochism. Cumulative headache: 0/87

Day 26: No progress. Cumulative headache: 0/91

Day 27-28: Took day off to confirm why I have no desire to ever use white mage.

Day ???: I've lost track of how long its been. I'm giving up, I'm only going to go back while Mystery Boxes: Bastok is up from now on.

        Re: Rambler's Gaiters

I sold my Mountain Gaiters because of these. (I bought the MG for the +INT)

The only problem I have with Rambler's is that BST can't use them. All the other jobs I have at a high enough level can use them.

You will want to use something to help you solve chests, like my web thingy:

        Elwynn's Treasure Casket Solver

(the page is self-contained and can be put anywhere else, even on your local filesystem)

          Bastok, since they're in Rolanberry.

I just got a pair of these for my Thf (for the Eva). They're not *as* good as Dancing Shoes...but they're less fugly and free so it works for me.

And as a Thf, I can tell you that being a Thf is NOT an advantage when unlocking a chest. Thf can't pick the lock at all, rather they can trade a Thief's Tool to the box for a chance, a chance at getting an extra hint. It's not even a good chance either, I'd peg it as being a 10-20% chance from past experiences. There have been many times where I would waste 10/12 tools from a stack on a single box. After that kept happening I just decided it wasn't even worth it because you spend more on tools then you gain from the trash in the box.

As for hints to help unlock the box, the only real trick that I know of that might not be well known is that guessing then number in and of itself gives you a hint. When you guess the wrong number, if you still have chances left, it will tell you whether the number is higher or lower then your guess. This can really help narrow down your guesses if used correctly. It's not that these chests are hard to unlock, it's just that sometimes you'll get some absolutely horrible hints, and when you have 5-10 different numbers to pick from, your chances of popping it are slim. As long as you can keep track of the hints and do simple logic problems, you'll open more chests then you'll lose em.

...unless they're all 4 hinters who only talk about one of the numbers. Those suck.

Wrong. It depends on who controls the zone that week, not who it "rightfully belongs to". So you look for the icon on Rolanberry on the conquest map matching one of the current Mystery Boxes, with the beastmen icon matching "Frontierlands".

Yeah, now if only I could get them to show up in a chest I'd be set. Unfortunately I think last night the only mystery boxes that went active were for Windurst, which ironically doesn't help me even though they control the Derfland region.
