What is the common way people first see that they have been hacked? I just tried to log on and my saved password is incorrect.

Going from the experience of my two friends, you wake up broke and naked on Fairy. pwd not changed but account stripped.

Ok so I'm reading yet another story about someone getting hacked w/ token. His main was deleted and two IDs added on the account. Too bad his story is off. You can't purchase/reactive/deactive ID's without the token. So why are people making up false stories of how they got hacked?

If anything it has been like that for several months. I've been dumping mules and reactivating them to try out other servers it always prompts me for a one time password. Changing CC and everything account related prompts you.

Because the story is false! Not to say everyone saying they got hacked is lying but they are leaving out huge gaps in their story and presenting it a certain way. Can the token be bypassed? Not sure yet. But OP left out the fact she uses windower which pretty much lets you bypass the intial log on one time password.

I dunno, but it happened to me. That month I took off at the beginning of the summer I got charged $26.17 or some odd number like that, prorated fees for several additional content IDs that had been added to my account. A week or so later our CC was used to buy some digital camera or something. The charges were reversed and SE customer support helped me sort through the whole thing pretty quickly, but it was a nice welcome to back log in to an LM-17.

I wasn't using the security token at the time, but I do run FireFox with NoScript and AdBlock up to date, SpyBot never flagged anything and virus scans found nothing. Only 3rd party program I'd been using was LatentChecker. It had been several months since that CC info was entered into a PC anywhere since we don't use it for anything else online. I'm clueless as to how it happened.

Ah, I was using windower but I don't know what you're talking about with the bypassing the initial login. At any rate it's the same program from the same source that pretty much everyone I run with uses and none of them have had problems. The two guys I know that did get hacked this month I don't think used the windower.

Using Windower has nothing to do with this. It has never let you bypass anything, and for your information, I quit the game months ago. I posted this merely as a service to others so that they know that these things are going on. You are free to read the thread on BG if you don't believe that I'm telling the truth.

Regardless, there is something a bit strange going on when people who use a security token are being hacked. And just "I shared my account info with my friend" isn't going to cut it anymore, unless your friend lives with you. It isn't your typical set of hackings.

And as far as deleting/creating characters, when you delete a character, the content ID is still there. Doesn't cost anything to create a new character where an old one once was.

Windower does let you log onto two different ones with the same one time password. You should try it. Several people have with myself included made it to the character select screen without dcing on both. I know your passing on information but atleast include "I use windower" so the "paranoia" so some of the can stop. Why use a secruity token while running a thrid party tool and then come back surprised when you get hacked?

I don't know if Angelx was talking about you or about the person who was hacked.

The subject mentioned is something I wondered about myself though, how many of the people using security tokens were using windower when they were hacked. I'd like to come back to the game for a bit, but I'm kinda paranoid, and I'll probably be paronoid until somebody explains why these new hacks are now happening.

You should try it.

It doesn't really matter. For total account security the only winning move is not to play. Security keeps getting better, the community is getting more vigilant about their personal practices and the security of the sites they visit, SE keeps coming out with new helpful measures, but the hackings continue. It's an arms race between us and the RMT. Their methods get better as ours do. There's never going to be a point where you can do everything on a list and know that it makes you 100% secure. Not even, it seems, playing on console. All you can do is your due diligence and come to terms with the fact that someday for whatever reason your virtual acquisitions might all disappear.

The only way to stop RMT is by getting rid of the buyers who support them. Everything else will end up in an arms race like TM said, and nothing will ever be solved.

Gotta love stupid cheater s.o.b.s who don't care about how much damage they do to the community by buying gil.

I wonder ... we seem to be getting a fair number of "inexplicable" hijacks, and some people are insisting that it MUST be something on the person's computer. What if it's not? What other possibilities are there, how would they work, what could you do to guard against them? After all, the information doesn't just get from your computer to SE's servers without passing through various systems in-between, for example.

I'm just bringing this up in hopes of avoiding too much of "It's their fault because it must be!" versus "It's not their fault because they say it isn't!"
