So, I had an idea for a game mod(not FF related) though I remembered the diverse selection of metal that FFXI had, so I went to the FFXI wiki to look up the various types and get some ideas. And, I noticed something - Mithril was spelt wrong. It had a y in it for some reason. But it wasn't a typo. This new metal known as Mythril had taken over FFXI! Why? What did poor old Mithril ever do to you?

You spelled "Spelled" wrong.A mans strength isn't measured by the size of his muscle, but by the size of his heart.

For the purpose of this game, I'm pretty sure it's always been Mythril.sigpic

There are other games - and possibly other incarnations of this game - where it's spelled with an I, but pretty sure it's always been Y in FFXI, even Brady spelled it with a Y.sigpic

Okay, yeah. Now that I've slept a bit and can think clearly, I do remember it being spelled with a y. It just didn't seem right last night for some reason...Originally posted by EllipsesReally, it's just like pretty much every question about this game that begins with "Why." Tolkien invented the word and spelled it "mithril". I don't know why the spelling was eventually changed since it's clearly still a reference to Tolkien.Defeated: Maat, Divine Might, Fenrir, Kirin, Cactrot Rapido, Xolotl, Diabolos Prime, Kurrea, 9/10 Dynamis Bosses (missing Tav), Promathia, Proto-Ultima, Proto-Omega, 4 Jailers, Apocalypse Nigh, 6/6 Nyzul Bosses

As for mythril and mithril, there are quite a few examples in fantasy fiction where spelling differs such as elfs and elves, dwarfs and dwarves. I think it's more down to successive authors wanting to put their own stamp on another writer's creativity then readers eventually adopting one or the other as being the "correct" spelling.
