  • When did it start being spelt with a 'y'?

So, I had an idea for a game mod(not FF related) though I remembered the diverse selection of metal that FFXI had, so I went to the FFXI wiki to look up the various types and get some ideas. And, I noticed something - Mithril was spelt wrong. It had a y in it for some reason. But it wasn't a typo. This new metal known as Mythril had taken over FFXI! Why? What did poor old Mithril ever do to you?

For the purpose of this game, I'm pretty sure it's always been Mythril.

Has it really? I could have sworn it used to be spelled with an "I"

Maybe I'm just from not having enough sleep.

There are other games - and possibly other incarnations of this game - where it's spelled with an I, but pretty sure it's always been Y in FFXI, even Brady spelled it with a Y.

Both spelled and spelt are are acceptable spellings, in the context where it was used in the post, anywhere in the English speaking world with the exception on the US spelt is the preferred spelling.

In the older games, I believe it was an 'I'. (FF IV and FF V, I think)

I was just giving him a hard time lol. A lot of words in the english (US) language are spelled wrong but accepted.

Mythril entered the series with FF7 I think. FFIIUS had "Silver" and FF3US had "Mithril". After that the 'y' became series standard.

Okay, yeah. Now that I've slept a bit and can think clearly, I do remember it being spelled with a y. It just didn't seem right last night for some reason...

It did, but not in this game.

Tolkien invented the word and spelled it "mithril". I don't know why the spelling was eventually changed since it's clearly still a reference to Tolkien.

Not in the UK it isn't.

As for mythril and mithril, there are quite a few examples in fantasy fiction where spelling differs such as elfs and elves, dwarfs and dwarves. I think it's more down to successive authors wanting to put their own stamp on another writer's creativity then readers eventually adopting one or the other as being the "correct" spelling.
