Check [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3"]wiki[/ame], they have the entire (model) production table there.

According to them the NTSC 80Gb version is backwards compatible (via software emulation.)

I got mine in mid sept. But it was the MGS4 bundle.

Damn, then no, mine isn't backwards compatible, I picked mine up in March of this year. Damn Sony, damn them to hell for taking off backwards compatibility.

Check the model though, there's a chance you got an older one.

Well i made sure I made it clear when I posted the instructions that not all 80 gigs can play PS2 games.

Re: anyone play FFXI on PS3?

a good rule of thumb here is that all backwards compatible models have four USB ports. If it only has two usb ports it's not backwards comparable...

I have successfully installed and run playonline and ffxi on my new 80gb ps3. I offer this step by step guide to what i did in hopes that it will help others who have had problems:

Disclaimer: You must have the original discs that came with the ps2 HDD.
From all i've read there is currently no way to get a compilation package (i.e. vana'diel collection 2008) to work on the ps3
You will also need your playonline ID and password.
Obviously internet connectivity is a must.
I do not yet own WOTG so i cannot attest to the feasibility of that yet. edit: after much research and PM's it has been proven that WOTG does NOT currently install to ps3 80gb too bad for us. call SOE and complain.

                    1. Place the Playonline/Tetramaster disc into ps3.

                    2. Go through the setup process as normal.

                    3. When offered a choice between registering new playonline ID or current members, choose the latter. I recommend you do not choose the automatic log-in option, you will see why later as it gets annoying having it log-in to playonline and having to immediately log back off to the original log in screen.

                    4. The installation should be relatively short, after which the system will reboot, restart from the ps3 toolbar (should be under games> playstation 2 game)

                    5. Playonline will connect and update (about 280 files, 6 minutes with hi-speed connection)

                    6. Now log-off playonline viewer back to the playonline log-in screen.

                    7. Choose the install option, you will be prompted to insert a disc. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

                    8. Insert the ffxi disc which has the orginal game and the rise of zilart expansion. (there are 2 discs in the orginal HDD final fantasy xi package)

                    9. Once the game has booted choose install.

(note: i viewed the movie first and then it begins to install, but this install did not start. i had to reboot and just choose the install game option.)

                    10. This install takes about an hour, find something else to do.

                    11. Afterwards hit OK and then the game asks you to remove the disc, do so, then hit OK.

                    12. You should be back to the ps3 viewer, choose to launch playonline again.

                    13. Now choose install, insert Chains of Promathia disc, start again from step 9-11. This install takes 25 minutes. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

                    14. You should be back to the ps3 viewer, choose to launch playonline again.

                    15. Now choose install, insert the Treasures of Auht Urgan disc, start again from steps 9-11. This install takes 30 minutes. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

                    16. Finally start playonline viewer again from ps3 viewer, however you should now go ahead and choose Games>Final Fantasy xi>Play and your update should begin.

                    17. Go to bed, as this update includes 4 and a half years of tweaks and changes made by POL and squeenix. Mine checked 17000 files, but many are redundant and only about 6500 are actually needed. This download can vary but i'd say 4-6 hours is a fair assumption based on hi-speed internet.

                    18. Congratulations!
This is dated. Sony patched the PS3 so the 2008 Collection and WotG install discs would work at the start of 2008 or so. You don't need the old discs for any of the compatible PS3s now, you just needed them for the first month or so that WotG was out. The current firmware makes the install as simple as on a PS2. I still see people quoting this guide, even though it's from late-2007, when the Collection was new and not in the PS3's list of HDD-approved PS2 software. This was fixed over a year ago.

Aye just to add another confirmation this here, I was playing on my PS3 way before I got it for PC. So it is quite possible and all zones and everything works just fine.
