  • anyone play FFXI on PS3?

I have a 80 GB PS3 (although the memory says 74 gb about.)

and it does have a folder for PS1/PS2 memory stuff, but you think I can install FFXI on this system?

I have used FFXI disk and registration codes already on my ps2 but my ps2's HDD is half damaged by a radiator. so it's unreliable and sometimes it doesn't even turn on.

I did have an xbox360 but I sold that after symptoms it will RROD soon, I did buy the vanadiel collection for that.

but does this mean I can't use FFXI on PS3 even if I install it using the same disk I used on my PS2?

well was kind of wondering if it's possible somehow. I mean like, my account can be used on any system but I may have to buy new disks?

I tried installing FFXI on my PS3 (also 80gig) even after downloading the patch to allow part of the hard drive to be partitioned as a ps2 hard drive and it wouldnt read the discs =/

Yeah you can install FFXI on the ps3.. here's how.. This is from another forum. People keep saying you can;t do it with the 80gig, but as long as it is backwards compatible, you'll be good to go.

I have successfully installed and run playonline and ffxi on my new 80gb ps3. I offer this step by step guide to what i did in hopes that it will help others who have had problems:

Disclaimer: You must have the original discs that came with the ps2 HDD.
From all i've read there is currently no way to get a compilation package (i.e. vana'diel collection 2008) to work on the ps3
You will also need your playonline ID and password.
Obviously internet connectivity is a must.
I do not yet own WOTG so i cannot attest to the feasibility of that yet. edit: after much research and PM's it has been proven that WOTG does NOT currently install to ps3 80gb too bad for us. call SOE and complain.

      1. Place the Playonline/Tetramaster disc into ps3.

      2. Go through the setup process as normal.

      3. When offered a choice between registering new playonline ID or current members, choose the latter. I recommend you do not choose the automatic log-in option, you will see why later as it gets annoying having it log-in to playonline and having to immediately log back off to the original log in screen.

      4. The installation should be relatively short, after which the system will reboot, restart from the ps3 toolbar (should be under games> playstation 2 game)

      5. Playonline will connect and update (about 280 files, 6 minutes with hi-speed connection)

      6. Now log-off playonline viewer back to the playonline log-in screen.

      7. Choose the install option, you will be prompted to insert a disc. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

      8. Insert the ffxi disc which has the orginal game and the rise of zilart expansion. (there are 2 discs in the orginal HDD final fantasy xi package)

      9. Once the game has booted choose install.

(note: i viewed the movie first and then it begins to install, but this install did not start. i had to reboot and just choose the install game option.)

      10. This install takes about an hour, find something else to do.

      11. Afterwards hit OK and then the game asks you to remove the disc, do so, then hit OK.

      12. You should be back to the ps3 viewer, choose to launch playonline again.

      13. Now choose install, insert Chains of Promathia disc, start again from step 9-11. This install takes 25 minutes. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

      14. You should be back to the ps3 viewer, choose to launch playonline again.

      15. Now choose install, insert the Treasures of Auht Urgan disc, start again from steps 9-11. This install takes 30 minutes. (only install the game, never choose the playonline viewer option!)

      16. Finally start playonline viewer again from ps3 viewer, however you should now go ahead and choose Games>Final Fantasy xi>Play and your update should begin.

      17. Go to bed, as this update includes 4 and a half years of tweaks and changes made by POL and squeenix. Mine checked 17000 files, but many are redundant and only about 6500 are actually needed. This download can vary but i'd say 4-6 hours is a fair assumption based on hi-speed internet.

      18. Congratulations!

oh thanks. um my supplies and stuff, I have some WOTG related stuff.

without being able to install WOTG, would that mean I have to start over to use the game on PS3?

If you don't have your playonline codes, pw etc.. then yes you'll have to start over.

no she means, that he has done some of the WoTG stuff, like job unlocking and things like that, and since she cant install WoTG on the PS3, she might not be able to access that character

you can access the character, as long as you are not currently a WoTG job class, or in one of its areas

I don't believe being a WotG job makes a difference as long as the character isn't in a WotG zone. Job releases (i.e the dats) are bundled with the pre-expansion update so that anyone can view all of said job's equipment and animations without requiring the expansion to be installed. It would be a bit of a bugger to not see the sch or dnc in your party.

it does matter, its an access thing, if you are in a WoTG zone, or your main/sub is DNC or SCH, you can not access that character, or last time I checked anyway.

You can access any character no matter the job as long as the are in a zone you have access to. The jobs that come with expansions require an area or two in that expansion to unlock so you couldn't access to them if you didn't already have them, however you can still use a job if you've previously unlocked it and then play on a machine that doesn't have that expansion installed.

The last time I re-installed everything I couldn't find my ToAU disc. My character was in Whitegate so I couldn't access her, so I asked a friend to move her to Jeuno. After that I could use all of my jobs and gear that I had from ToAU, simply couldn't venture into any of the zones.

ah ok, I misunderstood then, good to know. I knew you could not go to those zone, and I know that you could use the armor, just figured SE did some BS access lock, with jobs you have, but with no expansion installed *shrugs*

Hey Pwn, how do I know if my 80gig PS3 is backwards compatible asides from the fact that it would read the disc, cuz from what I was told, all 80gig PS3s are NOT backwards compatible.
