for a good start, look for a cardian (same type of thing you talked to to turn in that coupon) near the Windurst woods fountain, he gives you some new player quests

You don't "have" to talk to anyone in particular, though it's a good idea to just wander around and talk to just about everyone you see - quite a lot of characters in the game (NPCs) have quests or missions associated with them at some point time, so familiarizing yourself with the city and its inhabitants can save you some research later on.

Your most important contacts when you first start playing are the guards near the gates, particularly (for a Windurstian) the guards near the Windurst Woods / East Sarutabaruta gate, who will offer you missions. Be aware that you'll probably want to level up a fair amount before tackling too many missions, in the interests of safety.

This thread will help you get an idea of what you may be doing when starting: http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/new...-see-here.html

Always get Signet before you leave town, familiarize yourself with Fields of Valor and Checking enemies (stick to Easy Prey), store any Beastmen's Seals you find (never toss them if you need space...), and sell your loot at the Auction House. Once you get some money, upgrade your weapon, and depending on your job, at level 6-8, buy new armor (but check NPC stores too! Usually low level spells and equipment is cheaper off of NPCs than the Auction House.)

These sites will help as you progress through the game:
FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more For general info.
Vana'diel Atlas: Final Fantasy XI Maps collection - Treasure, NM, Quests, and Missions locations For maps.
Campsitarus-- The guide to FFXI xp camps! ^^ For party camp sites.
Final Fantasy XI Auction House - FFXIAH.com (Note: FFXIAH monitors the Jeuno auction house. Starter nations have separate AHs, prices may vary.)
