    Re: Ancient patch notes

Nashmau isn't technically an outland in terms of region, but it's an outland in the sense of a town that is separated from its city by being an island which cannot be accessed by any natural overland route. Additionally, Nashmau has had nomad moogles since it was added, which at least didn't feel as tacked on as tossing them at Selbina. IIRC, there's also no easy, gilbased tele to Nashmau, which the outposts in Valkurm and Buburimu provide.

I don't know. This seems more like inconvenient semantics than a genuine plot hole like Armando brought up with the Cardians.

Still, I'm sure Windurst can find some new use for the cards that doesn't interrupt its own storyline.

Add: this is a convoluted excuse of a definition if I had ever seen one.

So Armando and I talked about it privately. Here is the cliff notes version of the conversation:

(07:03:58 PM) feba35: THE POINT IS THAT CARDIAN CARDS ARE DUMB
(07:04:56 PM) Armando: I know but I don't want you breaking the plot
        --
(07:07:28 PM) feba35: yeah, even just letting you collect all 52 and then convert them into a deck of playing cards would be nice.
(07:07:48 PM) feba35: maybe make it some great ranged item for corsair, maybe have it linked to a minigame, maybe just have it be a bit of showing off armor
(07:08:48 PM) feba35: Or add in a trading card game (they know they want to), and allow people to trade in Cardian cards for booster packs or special cards or entry into tournaments or a starter deck
        (07:09:19 PM) Armando: Or I don't know.
(07:09:29 PM) Armando: Get all cards, get a Pankration Cardian.
        --
(07:15:34 PM) Armando: Do puppets even count as arcana?
        --
(07:19:24 PM) Armando: I think of them more as Evas.
        (07:19:31 PM) feba35: Evas?
(07:20:20 PM) Armando: You know, the ones from Evangelion.
        --
(07:22:14 PM) feba35: Man, FFXI needs a goddamn robot museum.
There. Issue closed, debate over. You can all go home.

There's some quest, possibly The Kind Cardian, where Apururu needs a card of the opposing suit to the cardian she's working on, iirc to essentially cancel and reboot its existing programming.
Ah, I remember something like that. You're on to something. I'll have to check those Cardian quests out all over again, talk to NPCs and rewatch cutscenes.

But I'm quite sure about the Aces not being autonomous. It's pretty important to the plot.

P.S. I was referring to Aerns and all other organ-dropping Sea mobs as Evas, not PUP Automaton.

Shhhhhhhh. It's not funny at all when you add context.

I haven't played the Tetra Master that comes with FFXI, but it'd be nice if it were intergrated into FFXI and that way you could use those cards towards it. Hell, put in some item refining so you can convert cards to items like in FFVIII. That'd be very sweet if they pulled it off well enough.

Edit: And I don't mean just "convert this card to a potion", they could be converted to gear if you had the right combonations. Or maybe have monthly tournaments and the winner gets a card they can either keep or convert to an awesome piece of gear or item.

"... and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."

Absolutely and I've been saying this for a while. WoW has in-game Bejeweled and now Peggle for killing time while lfg or waiting for a raid party to assemble. FFXI desperately needs a similar feature to stave off boredom during inevitable and sometimes lengthy downtimes. Everyone with FFXI already has TetraMaster installed unless they specifically removed them so it wouldn't even be necessary to develop and push down new assets, just find a way to implement it into the game. You can cite the age old excuse of PS2 limitations but give me a break. The overhead for running such a simple card game can't possibly be too large. Get that in and you get the benefits of Blizzard's solution with the added benefit of facilitating more player interaction through matches and the trading card aspect and it's somewhat canonical to boot. It's win-win-win. I don't understand why they haven't done it.

I'm not sure it would be worth implementing tetra master in FFXI. People seem to hate it so much, and it would cut into the revenue they make off the tens of people that play tetra master. Plus if you reuse the same assets, you'd probably need to make it full screen, and then you deal with overlapping it with FFXI menus, and so on and so on.

It wouldn't be that hard to design a new game. Plus then they can make a game that's competitive (against other players, or NPCs) AND can be played solitaire (for when you're just looking to kill time); and run it all through FFXI's normal menus. They can even charge $5 for a mini-expansion that serves solely as a start into the TCG, yay.

already have that, its called play something else while you wait ;p

as much as I would love TM embedded into FFXI (nothing extra added, just the ability to play the thing inside FFXI with others) it wont happen

so what I do, when waiting for anything from a party, to LS event, or what have you, I grab my PSP or switch over to my big screen and play an emulated system, or something off my 360/Wii

I'm not a fan of TetraMaster myself really. They should have stuck with Triple Triad. I think the UI issues could be overcome but I wouldn't expect the FFXI team to pull it off. The existing interface is already so awesome. Give it to some of the guys writing windower plugins and maybe they'd come up with something.

As to designing a new game, feh. They did that and the results was the craptacular Venture Roll. Of course that arguement works both ways. If they refuse to do a decent job doing even that, why would they bother retrofitting TM to be playable in game?
