You are simply describing natural behavior. It's not a culture of fear and it has nothing to do with 9/11.

In communal animal societies including humans, there exists in general in the community no significant threats. However, when such a threat arises within the community (e.g. someone saw a large snake), they alert the other members of the community to the specific danger. That way, instead of always having to worry about general danger, you can watch the ground more closely than you would the sky...

This has obvious benefits because if there is a new computer virus, you won't be scanning your hard drive for rapists...

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about threats arising at all. What you're talking about is someone saying "Be careful, that narrow road is icy", and other people driving more carefully because of it. That makes perfect sense. What I'm talking about is someone saying "Someone had a crash on a road we all already knew to be dangerously narrow. You should drive safely there.", as if nobody already realized they should drive safely, or the road was narrow.

Well, people get complacent. It's good to get a bit scared of things now and then, it gives you reason to check yourself and make sure everything is as it should be.

There shouldn't have to be a reason.

But do you check every time you get on the internet, to be sure no new holes have popped up? I sure in the hell don't. I trust that FF and its add-ons are doing their job, and weekly I do a full system scan and check to make sure my settings are still intact.

Most people probably don't even do that much. Complacent. But giving people a reason to remember, "Oh hey, I should check and make sure my shit isn't all jacked up," probably isn't such a terrible thing. People forget. Or get lazy. Or both. Whatever the reasons are for not being on guard 24/7, I don't think it's a bad thing that sometimes, things pop up and remind us to be cautious.

Feba I do understand what you are saying but in this reguard it is common courtsey. It is alot like it is snowing and some says watch out I just slipped. They are not assuming that your so out of sync or idiotic that your going to sprint to your car across frozen ground. Your taking it as you order hot coffee and you see "Beware contents of the cup may be hot". It is understood that you understand what it means, and because of the lowering number of instances some one may have gotten lax.

Actually, it's a bit more like saying your money's safer on the top floor if a burglar breaks into your basement, because he might not check the whole house.

Well, really, the best analogy I can think of right now is basically going into the bathroom to have private conversations because you're afraid your house is bugged, but you figure they wouldn't have bugs there.

                  Ah that brings back memories...

I'd get a phone call and the bathroom was right across the hall from the phone. So I'd stretch the cord into the bathroom (had that sucker stretched out 8 feet!) and sit on the toilet and talk. Well it used to irritate the hell out of my parents. They'd complain about the cord being across the hall and tripping on it. Ummm if you walk like a human being and not a TROLL dragging its feet, you'll get across the cord just fine. (Ah I still tell her that to this day because she STILL won't get a cordless phone!) So my mother decided to put a tape recorder in the bathroom. I'd get on the phone and she'd say "I have to use the bathroom." and then she'd go in there and turn it on. Then I'd go in and talk away. The next day she'd bring up stuff I talked about and endlessly tease me until I was in tears. I started whispering when I was on the phone but she STILL knew what I was talking about. It didn't matter what room I went into, SHE ALWAYS KNEW!

That's what you get for talking to people while you're on the toilet.

If you shared a room growing up, I'd think the bathroom might be the only place you'd get any damn privacy.
