    Re: If the World Ended

If FFXI eventually shut down, I'd just move on to DCU Online or Star Wars: The Old Republic. I'd stay in touch with the close FFXI friends I made and say farewell to the rest and move on to the next world I'm interested in.

Until there's actual information about Rapture, I can't really be that interested in it.

      Re: If the World Ended

I usually don't play MMO's for this long. I usually alpha and beta test them and when they go retail I drop them like a hot potato. But FFXI was different. My JP friend kept talking about it and then sent me the HDD for my birthday. I played a while with him but with the time difference it was difficult. So then the US beta came out and I got in on that. (In fact I got 5 beta invites. lol) My son talked me into playing it after we were done with the beta because I didn't want to play on my JP PS2. We got free PS2 copies for beta testing so I thought I'd do it for a month or two since it wouldn't cost much. Big.......Huge........GIGANTIC mistake!! lol But if the game went down, I'd just go back to my beta testing ways and maybe another MMO would eventually suck me in. Or I'd go find a private RO server if I felt the need to aggravate myself. LOL

If FFXI came to an end, I would shed a manly tear. Then I'd probably go do something else.

I'd like to say that I'd go on and keep in contact with the people from the game, but it's not true. Of the dozens of friends I've said goodbye to over the years, I only regularly talk to one of them. It's just not the same w/out an entire LS shooting the poo.

I'd just post anime videos here and play undubed (Persona) games, while blasting SE for often doing too little too late.

              Re: If the World Ended

I wouldn't be as devastated if FFXI shut down now, or anytime in the future, as I would have been a year ago when I was addicted to FFXI like it was virtua-crack. I'd get nostalgic and probably miss the fun I had in the first MMO I ever played, and then continued playing with a near-physical addiction.

In the end, I'd either give up MMOs for the time being, or give SE's new MMO a run. I'm kinda hoping that SE will take what they've learned during FFXI and infuse it into Rapture to create something even better than FFXI could ever be. If that doesn't happen, well I'm not sure why SE would even have ever wasted time developing it then. So here's hoping!

All of the new MMO's are too WoWish, if there's anything that keeps me bouncing back between WoW and FFXI it is how distinct they are. I think SE's next MMO will mimic alot from WoW, the masses like that and honestly SE isn't the type of company that can revolutionize the genre and create more MMO players like Blizzard can, the best they can hope to do is steal a chunk of blizzard's userbase.

I honestly do not believe SE's next MMO can survive without the "Final Fantasy" name. And I think it's bad timing because even if they are working on it now they couldn't possibly release it before 2010 or 2011, and by that time Blizzard's new MMO will crush everything. That's not to say I wouldn't give it a chance, I would love a new FF MMO that had a different setting like in the Ivalice world, or a steampunk type of world like FF6/7/8

                    Re: If the World Ended

I would only be "devastated" if I never got to do all the things I wanted to. I've completed a lot of things off my list, like finishing nation missions, ZM, CoP, ToAU, and the like, but there is plenty more I want to achieve and I'd be disappointed if I didn't get to.

I can't lie, I'm attached to Aksannyi. I have another character and I like her well enough, but she's just not Aks. That's how I think playing another MMO would feel. I might adjust eventually but I really don't ever want to lose Aksannyi. And I would be very sad if, even after I've decided to move on, I can't just pay her a visit now and again. I think it would be kind of like the death of a friend. I'd never get to see her again; all I'd have are the memories and photographs.

                    Depressing.

But I would keep in touch with my friends from the game, to the best of my ability. There are only about three or four people I'd want to stay in touch with, honestly, the rest are great but not people I'm close with. And I could hope that my ls wants to take up another MMO together, because we're a great group that works well together and I like them!

Considering I started with SWG, then left when the NGE changed the whole game (so it might as well have been shut down from my POV, it really wasn't the same), I think I have a good idea. I'd go looking for something new in MMOs, but not just any old thing. I mean, I went with Saga of Ryzom for a time before ending up in FFXI...

I'd be rather disappointed that time itself defeated one of my ambitions there after circumstances defeated the other, but given the FFXI's community's values I'd be rather unsurprised that it turned out this way. I'd be unlikely to deal wth an MMO again, but if I did I'd probably want a very Johnny-friendly one, as opposed to one that only theoretically has potential for thousands of customization options. I'd also want a community that I'm not completely out of sync with. -- Pteryx

I would be disappointed I didnt finish the missions and quests I wanted to. Then I would vow not play anymore MMOs because I know how much of a time sink they are.

I would go back to playing only FPS, RTS, RPG, Sandbox, and Sims on my PS3 for a few months. Then one of the many MMO for the PS3 would come and I would end up buying one of those and the addiction would start all over again .

                              Re: If the World Ended

I would be sad for sometime, but not so much for the demise of the game, but for the fact that I wouldnt be able to share the world of Vanadiel with the friends I have made. I mean yeah of course, I have all my close friends on myspace, yahoo IM, addresses and phone numbers, but hell it just wouldnt be the same ya know? I think Aksannyi put it best, losing my character would be like losing a friend and a part of myself. Ive poursed so much time and energy into him that seeing it all go away would be pretty depressing. =/

As for another MMO, not sure if I would want to commit that much time again. Unless a fair portion of my LS and FL were to migrate to another game, I would find it difficult to give it another go.

Blizzard's success with WoW is much akin to Las Vegas' success with gambling. They're both easy access to shiny lights, bright colors, and variable ratio reward schedules. The only difference is nobody comes out of WoW a winner.
