  • Laptop Graphics & FFXI

This is probably a shot in the dark but I thought I'd ask it anyway.

When I originally got my laptop it was to be used as a portable programming station. The thought of putting FFXI on the laptop never even crossed my mind until a few days ago. I have been spending an awful amount of time camping Stubborn Dredvodd for the ring he carries. Well, after about the 40th (yes, 40th) trip I decided that since most of my time now is spent on that barge I could easily put it onto the laptop and camp him using that, freeing up the resources on my desktop to do other things.

So I install and patch. Two hours later I boot it up and this is what I'm greeted with once I log into my mule:

    Yeah. Trippy!

To be honest I am completely shocked the laptop can run the game at all. Even if no one has a solution to the texture problem I'll be happy that I can at least camp the NM with horrible textures (better than not being able to at all). However, if there IS a fix to this, I would love to have it look at least PS2ish, if not better.

    The laptop:
    Studio Laptop 1735
    3GB of RAM
Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo (2Ghz)
Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family for the video, 358MB

I know the video is what's killing it. Heck, like I said, I'm shocked it even runs FFXI at all. But if anyone knows of a way to fix it, I'd be grateful to hear it.

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is the problem: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family for the video, 358MB

Fix: Update GPU or get new laptop.

I figured that'd be the answer. Sigh. Well, it's not worth dishing out tons of cash for a new laptop just to camp an NM that I can do with terrible graphics. I was just hoping that maybe, just maybe there was a slimmer of hope.

965 runs FFXI just fine up to 1280x1024. You have driver problems. Search the site.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

My laptop has a 965 and it looks exactly the same when I tried it. It also crashes in populated areas like Jueno/WG/etc.

I run an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 64mb on 1.7ghz Pentium M with 1GB DDR and it runs at full resolution and runs well. The system you are presenting here definitely seems way better than that and shouldn't have that issue. Seems like a driver problem.

There are others who have had the exact same problem on this site and they found a solution. It involves drivers - do a search of the forum and you should probably be able to find where the best drivers for this chipset are.

Yeah. It's a driver issue. It's ironic that I have to downgrade my driver to play this game. You'd think the newer ones would work just the same.

                  Re: Laptop Graphics & FFXI

Drivers are weird like that. I recently upgraded my nvidia driver, but my frame rate took a nose dive, while other games had a noticeable improvement. I ended up switching back to the old driver.

What driver did you use to fix it?

Just a quick question to whoever fixed their model rendering issues via driver swap: did you suffer frame rate problems afterward?
