Drop Rates/Farming/Needing Tylenol

Ok, so I finally gave in and started playing FFXI again. Seeing as how I'm gonna be on student status in the Marine Corps for the next year and a half, I'm gonna need something to do.

One of the reasons I initially quit was because I've always had a very hard time farming/acquiring items. I have clothcraft to level 80 and would usually farm leather and silk to make some money and level my leathercraft sub (currently level 12). The problem is lately, drop rates for me seem to be almost non-existant. I thought I was just being paranoid, that is, until I just spent three hours in Buburimbu farming.....and not a DAMN silk, nor dhalmel hide dropped. Three hours....is it just me or is something wrong with my account? I just spent three hours farming and averaged ZERO gil an hour. Anyone noticed drop rates this bad? Should I call a GM? Is this an account issue or a luck issue? lol

I don't know what to do for gil now =(

(I'm farming with THF sub TH1 on my BST)

Farm in higher level places, there's a better chance of them dropping then. For silk try rolanberry fields That's where I go for silk

IIRC, drops could be related to the level difference of the mob and yourself. I'm sure they won't drop to 0, but I have also noticed the same thing -- as I got higher in levels, the drops from the same mob seemed to shrink.

As Meg said, go for a place a bit stronger -- higher level mobs have a higher chance of dropping items.

I always get a nice drop rate in Pashow in the Leech Camp where Vorax pops

Hmm...well, I'm gonna try farming the same spot on my level 31 NIN and see if the difference is bigger or not. Never thought about drop rates being proportional to do difference of the mob level and my level. I used to farm 25-100k an hour in Bubu using the same setup. (Around same time last year, before I quit)

Higher level monsters generally drop an item at a higher drop rate (from my own experiances) Maybe try a higher level area?

I'm not so sure about the level difference thing. I'd like to see a proper citation showing that SE really did that.

What I do know, however, is that you will get less drops solo than you will in a party (it gives a chance at a drop to every member of the party), which makes it seem like you are getting less drops when farming solo. And you will get a better chance at drops with Treasure Hunter active. (sub /THF15 or better yet main THF45)

I sub THF when I'm farming on BST. Right now I'm farming Soldier Crawlers in Crawler's Nest. Got 8 Silks in 2 hours =/. Better than nothing, but still not fast enough gil. (1 stack of Kaginawa toolbags is 100k on my server....) At least I got 7 Beastmen's Seals and 4k XP, lol.

There's also (theoretically) moon phase, but I can never remember which is supposed to be better for farming.

If the difference between your level and the mob's level affects the drop rate... then all the drop rate info on the wiki is pointless :D

I kinda hope it is because there's some crazy data over there.

Well honestly I've tried farming silk in Bubumuri plenty of times. I think the drop rates for silk there are just notoriously low. I've had better luck farming crawlers in Maze of Shakrami since you can also steal silk from them. Caterchipillars are particularly good for that, although I think you can steal silk from any crawler there. There is a route near the entrance on the Bubumuri side with 8 Caterchipillar. I think it's near the Argus pop. You can circle around there to your heart's content, or try the Carnivorous Crawlers elsewhere in the maze.

Fair enough, Bal, but it certainly does seem that way from my own experience. Maybe my account is just bugged... or any of a hundred other explanations.

Try higher level area, also please level your thief sub. That's all the suggestion I can give about it. Sorry!

The level difference between yourself and the mob only governs the exp you get but not drops. It has been said (thanks to Selphiie who came up with the famous farming guide) that higher level mobs drop items more often than their lower level counterparts. Lvl up higher, go /thf, and farm in different areas dude, you should be alright ^^b

I decided to give Bubu another shot. And in two hours, I've farmed 4 stacks of silk, and successfully synthed two stacks of Dhalmel leather. (My Leather is 13 now ^_^) I even had one Dhalmel drop 3 hides at once. So that's about 100k gil in 2 hours.....(Using the same 59BST/GimpFarming15THF sub)

Guess it just comes down to luck sometimes. =/
