I am a bit in the same boat as Ruffry -- farming isn't very realistic for me. About the most I ever farmed was attempting to get a Mary's Horn (never did get it, but I had a lot of fun with all the sheep... all I'll say on that is that Nursemaid's Harp is pure awesomeness). I remember also trying to do tigers outside Jeuno back in the day when everyone was doing tigers.

Otherwise, I have my 68+2 Woodworking (with no subs, so I can't really go on without a ton of money to invest) and a lot of seals that nobody wants to help me spend.

I have done gardening in the past, and I was quite good at it, but I still haven't sold my stuff from my last round (about 3 months ago) because of computer issues that came up at the same time -- unfortunately, a lot of the stuff is on my second account to be sold, to which the password was lost and I can't log in to. And talking with SE Help Desk really isn't high on my list at the moment.

Don't forget that a few BCNMs can be soloed if you have the appropriate job. Though the drops from them may be comparatively less valuable due to the easier access presented by soloability. Still, even Mannequin Head can bring in a decent return if you aren't desperate to sell it immediately and can wait a while for temporary supply gluts at low prices to dry up (though 'a while' has been getting longer and longer; I think I had my last Mannequin Head for over a month before it sold).

I guess it depends on what it was. If it was something that really benefitted me, I'd probably keep it mostly to myself and only share with friends. If it was something that I was proud to know, I'd probably be more willing to share it with others.

I'm not overly concerned with credit but I do dislike it when someone else takes credit for something I did.

Re: What would you do if you knew something that didn't appear to be widely known?

I've figured out a few money making things that, due to the way they work, I can tell that others on my server obviously know about them too. But that still doesn't mean that I'm going to shout them to the world. It's better that ten know a trick than a hundred. And there are some things that just won't work if too many people know about them.

Another thing to look for is opportunities for mules to sell crafting materials from other cities. Many crafted items need materials from a different craft with a guild in a different city, and are usually in short supply. You can make a few gil by finding cheap sources and throwing them at a city mule to sell. Not only will you make some gil, but you will help the crafters in that city by making the materials available. In fact, the reason I started doing this was because I couldn't find one particular ingredient that I needed when leveling up a craft, and had to go out of my way to get some. Now others have finally caught on and are selling that item, so I'm moving to another item that's in low supply.

I would just tell your close friends and let it spread that way. I wouldn't go and tell everyone on the board or on the wiki if it's something that could easily affect how much you are making.

              To many trolls!!
