I'd say about 10% of RDMs level it because they enjoy it and its useful, 15% level it just to leech the relic because it looks cool and then 75% just level it for merits and then try to hide the fact they ever leveled it to 75. They'll show up THF or DRK instead.

I am in that 10%. I LOVE RDM! I've done it 4 times, in fact. I just wish that I could get in an ls that would let me play the damn job!! Should have never leveld blm. ><

1% - good "melee" RDMs.

I like RDM ... but only solo or lowman. By lowman I mean less than four people.

I would say that 10% would go

2% Pink Mage
2% Melee (of which 1% of that knows how to do it)
4% Universal (players who use RDM in any situation required, healing/melee/tanking/kiting/nuking/Enfeebling)
2% Solo

All the RDMs I know are in the 10%, which suggests that kitten's numbers are a little off.

Why would anyone who doesn't like rdm level rdm to merit when they can just as easily level nin or war/nin, which they would probably like better, and have 4-5x as many party slots to fit into? It makes no sense.

Clearly this is all just my pesonal take on the question and if I get any facts wrong please someone correct me, i've been on break from the game since early October08.

I've got an Elvaan, and RDM is my only 75, I've since moved onto 40PUP and 44NIN, and I'm trying to take both up to 75 when I can, with breaks to lvl DNC and SCH...

Anywho,

RDM-

-Very Very fun to lvl once you get Convert and Refresh and also somewhat quick due to these abilitiy/spell, before these it can be sorta tough, and I'd say between 20-40 you'll either get the melee that casts mentality or the caster that melee's mentality. From 40ish on you'll probably want to focus on "caster that could melee, but choses to do so only in a few instances"
-Capable soloist/hybrid class, Arguably the best soloist when subbing /NIN
-Endgame...well....Endgame is Endgame, and From what little I experienced in my 6 months at 75, This is where you'll branch off into either the good or bad category of RDM.
After about 10 Dynamis runs, I was burnt out...and RDM in a Merit party will burn you out also.

If you chose this route enjoy the journey because personally I figured out that lvling a job was way more fun than having a job lvl'd

WHM-

-What can I say, aslong as you understand that Regen is your bread and butter as soon as you get it, your parties should be smooth, I have mine at 38, and It wasn't bad lvling, I just didn't favor the role of a Healer. Once you get into parties with capable support abilities (RDM/BRD/COR/DNC to an extent) lvling should be quick
-Can solo somewhat at higher lvls from what i've seen, Dmg Mitigation gear is available and as a Taru your MP won't take as massive a hit without +MP Gear
-There are a Ton of WHM's out there that know more about this than I, but I didn't see many in Merit Parties. They are the best Healer of course and required for most Endgame events.

SCH-

-I honestly don't know much about this Job other than what I've read, but it seemed to me that they mainly came to lvl 10-30ish parties as a hybrid BLM.
-I think they are as capable or slightly less so as a soloist, than BLM.
-In my shell, and some others that I talked to they filled the primary role of a Nuker along with BLM's. I didn't get to merit with many but I think they can fill a roll in a mana burn party quite well, as a Taru you'll be at an advantge with this as well.

My advice on SCH, and please take it with a grain of salt, and listen to the folks that have it lvl'd before me, but I'd almost say don't go this way, only because SCH's sub or can sub most of the 3 original mage jobs dependant on situation. I would focus on lvling one of them first before taking scholar to 75... but opinion's are like Arse holes....everyone's got one and that's mine.

BRD-

-Haven't lvl'd this job either but from what i've read, and seen, This job can be lvl'd fast...like ridiculusly so... I've had friends that told me they lvl'd BRD 1-75 in 2 months just to Merit with it
-I'm not sure this guy is cabable of soloing...I would say probably not, especially as Taru
-Endgame, you will have a roll that is pretty dynamic, sleeping mobs, refreshing mages, buffing Melee, I imagine it's the same in Limbus and Salvage. Merit parties....Ah you will never want for a merit party...if you do, just make one...you'll be able to find some DD's and healer to go at all hours it seems like.

Honestly, I would recommend lvling RDM/WHM/BLM to 37, Go unlock SCH and BRD when you hit your last one of the 3 to 37 and then lvl them to 37.....Maybe make a list of positives and negatives of all 5 and then decide which one you wanna take to the end. I wish when I started playing I'd have done this sort of thing. But like everyone has said, Have fun, It's about the Journey, not the Reward at the end.
