  • Genuinly considering buying ffxi but worried 15 days is long enough

Hiya I have played heaps of MMOS, too much to list but I have always wanted to know what FF online was like however they never did a proper "no strings attached" trial until now which made me stay clear. I am currently installing the game and I am glad for a free trial but having heard it is a really tough game I am sceptical 14 days will be near enough to see anything good in the game, at the same time I dont fancy popping money monthly on the promise of fun only

I really liked the original FF games and I like MMOs in general but I was wandering if people can just tell me what they like about the game? I know in advance it has quite a bad grind, I did play lineage 2 and that had quite a grind as well but I think so long as the game is full of fun things then the grind is worth something, anyway Im going to jump in the game so any tips people could give me would be appreciated as I know FFXI is hard in advance, I do know someone who played and only stuck around for a few weeks and then sold his copy, I have never seen the game but this person is a semi casual game player and I am not so Im hoping I will enjoy the game.

I am actually just a uni student so cash is not in abundance however if I was going to buy the whole game I would want the best deal possible on a one of pack which includes FFXI+ every expansion, I noticed used and new ones on playonline are very reasnable and I would be tempted to go with those but then I dont know all the caveats of this game or how it works, what pack would people recommend I buy?

    FFXI Pros:
    - Good art direction
    - A very solid story that the player progresses through via quests, battlefields, and cutscenes. This is, in my opinion, the game's main selling point.
    - Job change and support job (aka sub job) system let you try out as many jobs as you want on a single character, and gain extra abilities from your support job.
    - Very group-oriented.

    Cons:
    - It's fairly old, so the user interface and certain other gameplay elements can feel a bit clunky sometimes.
    - Being very group-oriented, there was initially very little solo content. They've been slowly improving upon this aspect of the game, but you'll still have to "earn" your ability to solo by levelling up certain sub jobs and your NPC "pet."
    - No true PvP content (there are some sport-like games that pit you against other players and require you to KO opponents to win, but there's no such thing as real PvP or duels.)

What you want to buy is the Vana'diel Collection 2008 for the appropriate platform. It'll have the original game + all 4 expansions released to this date. The next expansions are a ways off so you've got nothing to lose with buying it.

lol thanks for the replies people and yeah thats cool 15 days = addiction, that what I want to hear!

Cheers for keeping me right with what to buy for when I upgrade!

Btw , I downloaded the trial from fileplanet and Im just wandering if I installed it okay as yes it says updating game but its like the fileplanet client only contains a fraction of the full game as it seems to be redownloading every file? My 15 days trial has started and its goingh to take like 9 hours to download the stuff, Im just wandering if I should have installed playonline to my c drive , its just I have playonline on D and FFXI client fom Fplanet on C, Im thinking I should maybe cancel but unsure

No, the initial install generally takes extremely long unless the fileplanet trial is different. It's one of the bad things about the game, as some people will want to play and then have to wait for the install.

Never effected me though. I set it to download, go to sleep for the night, and woke up to play.

No, a 14 day trial will not even begin to scratch the surface of the game. Getting to most of the really fun stuff will take you longer to achieve. I think that the 14 day trial just doesn't show people enough of the game to get them hooked.

Now as for not wanting to buy the game, why not? It's $20 for the ENTIRE GAME....thats all of the expansions. You get 30 days to play without the additional monthly fee. So you could play FFXI for 44 days with no monthly fee and you'd get 44 days of entertainment for $20. What can you do in your life that will offer you 44 days of entertainment for $20? Going out with the boys for one night costs you at least twice that if not more. Lazer Tag for a night costs more. You can go see 4 movies which is 8 hours of entertainment for that price. You can play this game 8 hours in ONE DAY easily. Honestly I don't understand why people get so caught up over spending $20 on this game.

And let's not forget that its almost Christmas..............put it on your list??

lol yeah okay point proven and yeah so if I spend $20 at the end of my 30days I will get the full game+expansions for a further 30 days, if that is the case then I agree it is a very good deal.

Thats me jumping in now, not sure what my player name will be but I will post it here, so you can give me some hassle about being a newbie in game lol

Hopefully cyas in game, thanks! Its good to see people positive about a game thats quite old. BTW in regards to graphics well even though I have a decent PC its all about gameplay which constitutes a good game as far as Im concerned

Ok I have created a character, its a female elf called Nikkal , its just they are alot more pleasant to look at lol . I am pretty clueless as to how the jobs work but I have made my elf be a red mage, kinda hoping thats a good long term choice but you know what its like in MMOS a newbie doesnt learn until way later hehe

I alt tabbed out the game just to tell you folks my character name but the game didnt like that so when I log back in I hope I get the intro sequence again as it seems quite quality! I also like how they from my somewhat very limited perspective thus far have kept the FF look and feel

Oops kinda think I am in trouble alt tabbing at the intro as my character seems to be staying logged in, I cant delete the char and I cant get logged in and its been like 5 mins, silly newbie me lol

I don't think so. You get 14 days free or 30 days by buying the game. You can't tack on additional free time on existing accounts or content ID's so to get the 44 days, you would have to play the 14, delete your character, uninstall the trial, install the full game and create another character.

eh, with the cost of birth control, it's not that cheap.

And the cost of a kid... let's not get started on how unworth it that is.

I guess it's free if you have a thing for old ladies?
