I very much agree with this-

While I think FFXI is a fantastic game and overall a lot more fun than other MMORPGs I've experienced, it is extremely biased towards the end-game, which makes it difficult to keep new players, and in a lot of cases to even get players interested to begin with.

That said, chances are in your favor that you will find a decent group of people to XP/friend with, or a good linkshell, and you'll have a blast. If you're into MMORPGs b/c of the RPG factor, then you'll be pleased to know that there are too many quests and missions to count, and outstanding storyline (at least so far, for me).

I've heard this a few different times from people that have driven all of the popular MMORPGs out there, that FFXI is the game for the veteran MMORPG player. It can be rather dificult(which I like a lot), but I think overall it is well balanced, the community is great (there are always people looking to help out), and it seems like once you reach the end-game, the possibilities just become endless.

Actually from my understanding you do get the full 30 day free trial that comes with every purchase of the game, resulting in a whopping 44 day period before you get billed.

As to the OP, don't worry about making a bad decision for your "long term" goals right now. FFXI is a game where you can literally change almost anything and everything at any time. About the only thing that can't be changed without starting over is your race. But everything else can be changed at any time. I think that should be listed as a Pro for FFXI as you can literally do everything in this game with a single character.

Yes, it is possible just as you stated. Thanks for confirming you can play 44 days for free. I never said anything about playing on the same character did I?

Re: Genuinly considering buying ffxi but worried 15 days is long enough

You don't need to uninstall anything. You would, however, have to cancel the first account's content ID within the 14 days and start a new account with a new character to get the next 30 days free. You could overlap one of the days to at least let you transfer belongings to the new character via Delivery.

Note that all you need to do to stop the billing is cancel the Content ID, which can be done from the Content ID section of the FFXI page in PlayOnline Viewer. You don't need to delete your character (you may be able to recover it later if you reactivate the content ID, if you don't delete it), and you don't need to cancel your PlayOnline account (you may want to save it for 2-box use later if your finances get better; a lot of people find the ability to be their own emergency backup really helpful). Note that once you cancel a POL account, all the registration codes you used on it are gone forever, so the general advice is to never do this.

Completely off-topic but TGM's new sig confirms my fears about her being Shantotto's sister.

Really? Cause a guy in my LS started with the 14 day trial then moved to the 30day one with the same character.

Re: Genuinly considering buying ffxi but worried 15 days is long enough

15 days is long enough to start an addiction but maybe not long enough to suck you in completely.

Everyone I have introduced to this game always does the same thing, they get to level 20 max. and they get bored of grinding and throw FFXI in the bin. They see me play and they want to do all the things I'm doing(Dynamis/Sky etc). Point is: more opens up to you the higher level you get, nothing worth having comes easy right?

However, they've added a ton of stuff since I last bothered trying to get a friend to play, Fields of Valour being the very latest makes leveling a lot easier, they also upped EXP this year which is a nice treat as well as many other goodies which make grinding seem less daunting. Another point I think is good is to balance out what you're doing, if you get really sick of grinding take some time out do some missions, some quests, take up a craft. It keeps you sane

I really hope you enjoy playing, just please don't rate this entire game on your first few levels because it really does get better the further you get into it not only because more is available to you but because your understanding of things get better, you meet new people etc etc

Endgame was never my goal...in fact it looks boring ot me. If you want to hook your friends just show them video of the rank 3 dragon...I know it's easy but for me that is where the game really starts. If you don't at least face this lvl 25 cap hurdle(and maybe even get 30 so you can quest the Advanced jobs) I just don't think you can say you gave the game a fair shot.

Like most people have said, 15 days isn't going to show you a lot of the content people enjoy, but it will probably be long enough to keep you hooked or at the very least, curious.

I don't just mean endgame, in general more things open to you the more you play. For me it was getting the next bit of awesome looking gear XD But there's new areas and you come across new monsters, you can do more mission wise the higher level you are etc etc Things just generally get better the further up you go, harder but better.

I was worried about staying interested after the 15 day trial too, but then I found a good linkshell and got a chocobo egg.
