It would be better if they placed them in Bastok Markets or in Batok Mines.
Like in Sandy, they are infront of the AH where peple can actually see them.
As has been noted, there's a certain logic to the location: It's a wide, expansive courtyard with a fountain, near the airship dock and thus theoretically well-traveled. There's all sorts of shopping along the upper level. Presumably Bastokers coming from the residential area to shop would pass by the Port Bastok fountain regularly.

That said, the fact that the cliff in North Gustaberg is an impassible obstacle (unless you're a time-traveler) limits the usefulness of Port Bastok for anyone not coming or going by airship, and airship travel is pretty seriously restrictive, so only wealthy merchants and highly-ranked officials and adventurers actually use it. So there are a lot of arguments as to why Port Bastok would be a rather limited venue compared to Bastok Markets...

At a guess, this may have had something to do with the old crafting economy. Back during inflation, crystal prices were well-differentiated based on supply/demand consideration; one of the reasons why Smithing was considered so expensive (particularly at low levels where ingredients themselves are somewhat plentiful) back in the day was the high cost of Fire Crystals, which depending on where you bought them could cost 7k/stack or more. One of the main things which brought down or drove up the cost of crystals was elementals' availability or lack thereof. (Another factor being commonality of the crystal dropping off an xp mob, which is why Dark Crystals used to be expensive pre-ToAU even though if you're high enough level to farm Xarcabard you can get Dark Clusters easily).

While the price differentiation at the height of inflation was probably more than SE envisioned or wanted to promote, it's pretty clear they never intended all crystals to be equal in value in the eyes of the market.

I think after the initial Auto-sort addition, crafters started complaining about how it messed up their "system" in that all the stuff they made would neatly stack up on the bottom of their inventory. While the non-auto stacking of stackable items is an issue, the non-sorting of non-stackable items is a preference to many.

...sorta off topic, but not really. This is something that is a MASSIVE annoyance to me. Bastok's natural surroundings create an excellent defensive postion, but in the past, that entire concept was completely ignored. The way Past gusta is set up makes no sense because, due to that ramp, the Quadav would have an easier time marching *directly* to Bastok's front door. But instead they go out of their way (to the point where they come down the ramp from Palb mines) to attack a tiny outpost? The entire layout of Past gusta is just irksome to me. Saruta's fort is right in the path from K&N and Giddeus to intecept advancing Yagudo. Ronfa's fort is between Sandy's gates and Jug's border to stop Orcs as they charge in. But in Gusta, the fort is out of the way, in some far off corner of the zone, where it actually takes longer for the turtles to get to from either direction they attack from. And on top of that, two easily defendable defensive positions (the Drachenfall Bridge or the top of the Ramp) are left wide open to passing enemy forces.

When I used to invision the Crystal War, I always thought of that bridge being locked down, with a big wall and cannons mounted all along the ravine. A perfect defensive point that unlike Windy and Sandy, kept the turtle out of the city. Instead we have to defend a tower in the middle of no where with no defensive significance or advantage in any way.

Though Fire Clusters may have been rare, Fire Crystals were the bread and butter of every newb playing this game for a long time. I thought Fire Crystals were expensive due to the superior demand of them, as they're used in almost every craft, and that smithing was expensive because some of the ores needed in most skill up recipies were so expensive on their own. The only time I saw fire crystals hitting 7-8k was during the peak of inflation, at which time everyone was powering their crafts to make the most out of what they had.

The better question would be why is that set still not storeable, (and AF/Relic +1 for that matter)
By that logic, SE should just make Abjurations Rare and not exclusive.

How can SE think that we're not careful with our lots? Sounds condescending.

Both are true. Its just incredibly laughible how cheap they are now though. I remember when I started leveling goldsmithing back in 2005, they were like 4-5k. Now fire crystals are like 300g a stack. Usually the most expensive are lightning (1.5k) Dark (2k) Water (1-1.2k) Light (3-4k). Earth and Wind vary based on location that is in first place.

Because the lower tier gods and kings were intended to be killed far more frequently then Kirin. Kirin was supposed to be like how AV and PW are now, a super, near unkillable mob that will only be bested by the strongest of the strong. Not farmed in under a minute to the point people are complaining about his ???'s repop timer.

Male Humes and Tarus really get the worst of this. Hell, my War AF shows more skin then being naked.
