You will not be able to login. The game will give you an error after you try to access your character. Tried it before.

Not much you can do other than buy the expansion (you'll want it anyway). Mebbe a GM can help thru PoL like others have said.

I try to 'do as the Romans do' in the 'toon, character, charrie, alt' aspect. I find the term that seems to be common amongst the general public of the game and roll with it. My preferred term is 'charrie' because... hell, I don't know. Because I like to stick 'ie's on words and mangle them?

I use alt from time to time, but only for...well, Alternate Characters. Not-the-first-character-I-made characters. I do not designate a main. Ever. I am a fucking alt-oholoic. And I level them all. Though not evenly.

I don't personally care what people call them, though. Toon was common in the SWG crowd I was around, so it never bothered me.

If you try and log in with your character in Whitegate but without having ToAU installed, SE will flag your account as hacked and delete your character and black list your credit card number.

Alternatively, it'll just say that you can't log in because you don't have the appropriate expansion pack installed.

Yeah. It actually tells you that before the character screen even comes up.

Fortunately I called a GM who saved the day with this winning advice: Buy the expansions.

Okay, I'm curious, and since this is derailed to hell already, I'm just gonna ask. Lets say you've installed ToA and have been to the area and done missions and quests and yatta yatta yatta. If you're in, say, Sarutabaruta when you log off, will you be able to log onto that account on a computer/360/PS3 that doesn't have ToA installed? What if your job is is BLU, COR or PUP or /sub any of those jobs?


And by the way, since everyone is getting up in arms over the toon debate, let me put my two cents in. Why the fuck would you use the term gay as a derogatory comment? That is just a stupid thing to do. I know it is common, people do it all the time, blah blah blah, but seriously. It is fucking disrespectful and it shows immaturity. It also doesn't really help your argument.

As long as you are not in the expansion areas when you logged out, you can still play on a machine without the expansions. I didn't have WoTG on my laptop for about a week after I got it, and was still able to play. I'd get a message when I logged in saying as much, too.

Thanks for that! I know on The Other Game, once you've linked an account to an expansion, that account can only be played on computers with the expansion installed, and I've never had to deal with it on FFXI, so curiosity got the better of me.

Ya you can even use Scholar if you don't have WotG installed (assuming you already have it unlocked, of course).

Just don't forget to change your home point if its in the past. >.>
(Actually I've never tried this.......and while I'm sure you don't get to go back to the past, what would happen if you died and released? >.>)

Which, uh, pretty much implies the OP is stupid for calling it a toon. The action of calling a character a toon doesn't exist in a vacuum, someone has to perform it. Worse yet, you didn't use the word stupid, you used "gay."
