Well, its Shantotto so deal with it or go cry moar with the GameFaqs kids over it. Their thread about Shantotto was actually hilarious.

"Blatantly advertising" FFXI because they put Shantotto in it... or maybe because she's a FF character. Nah, that couldn't be it at all.

And at best its viral marketing, like Roy and Marth in SSB:M got people curious about Fire Emblem and all that. Just because a lot of people don't play FFXI doesn't mean it should be treated like a black sheep in the franchise.

Yes, yes! Thank you! Mere text can not describe how much empathy I feel with your words.

Seriously, it's a Final Fantasy game like any other (and very probably the archetypal Final Fantasy, considering S-E's constant access to it), quit pretending it isn't/doesn't exist you (third person) morons!

Yeah I love the people that are like "omg I love Final Fantasy soooo much" then you mention FFXI and they start cursing at you x.x

FFXI has all the nice FF stuff...... in a nice MMORPG package ;p

Being the mission junkie that I am requiring a group of people to get missions/quests done is one of the things I hate about XI. Still, XI is by far one of the best games in the franchise.

PS > And forget about saying the obvious stuff about it being an MMOG and all that. Everyone who plays the game knows at least to some degree that XI's format as an MMORPG is at the same time it bigest strength and weakness.

Being a MMOG allows XI to have quality content and length no other single player RPG would ever have, while at the same time the need to accommodate the MM's social part of the game can both be a blessing or a curse depending on your particular playing habits. While also limiting a lot of other content it could be added, all for the sake of the balance required in a MMOG.

<Insert paradox comment about the format limiting development while at the same time being the source of said amount of developed content in the first place>

I never objected to Shanntoto myself she's a hialrious character. It's just that the people who haven't done many of the ToAU quests, live in Windy or have done Ballista likely haven't even heard of her (can't remember how often you see her in the 4-1 to 5-2 stretch of the Nation Missions but I know she makes a brief appearence for other nations). My main issue is that is only happened because the Japanese playerbase are obsessed with Tarutaru *Cough, Cough*.

Adding someone like Excenmille or Trion would be awesome even if it would just make them both generic swordfighters. Excenmille was awesome in the WotG missions and Trion was hilarious in ToAU. Neither are likely to be put in the game but I can wish.

For Villains I'm still putting money on the Shadow Lord purely because the others would be huge spoilers. Though thankfully I haven't had any of the plot for ToAU spoiled for me yet (still only on the Royal Puppeter Mission which is 11 I think).

Actually it'd be really cool to see a future expansion where she's finally grown up some.

I'm really sorry Mal, but I saw her first.

You can have Ulmia and Lilisette though.

I'd probably pick Verena over Ulmia though.

Does FFXI have any weak females with much of a role in the story?

I mean, PS2 FF games have very strong females in general; and a very strong argument could be made that they all have female leads. More heroines than heroes.

Depends on how you define weak, I guess (and how much is "much of a role"), but I don't see Verena kicking anyone's ass. The Star Sibyl either. And the original Cornelia's main storyline accomplishment was

Actually... does Aphmau fight anyone? Ever? Let alone win? You certainly can't deny she has a role in the storyline, but it seems to be more of a "stirring things up" role. I think this applies to Lion too.

FFXI's storyline, not unreasonably, relies on the player to do a lot of the fighting. So the NPCs don't get to do much to show their strength.

If you introduce a distinction between viewpoint character (Tidus, Vaan) and the center of the storyline (Yuna, Ashe), maybe.

FFVI had female leads, too (two of them, even - one for each world).

Even if she's insane, anything that lets me be a taru again, without having to pay $12/month is a step in the right direction.

Now let's take it one more further. An open-ended offline FF game that has Tarus and shit, and my life would be complete. I love creating my own charrie and having jobs and stuff. Not enough games like that offline.

Personally I always saw Prishe in more of a kid sister type fashion, even to the point where I've openly stated that if I have a kid I'd want her to be just like Prishe. Strong, confident, and caring and all that. But as for a woman to knock boots with, that's definately Najelith, though Ulmia and Curilla aren't far behind.

What can I say, I dig strong women.

Strength is more then just physical. It's emotional, mental and spiritual. None of the four you mentioned outright beat anyone up, but they remain calm, firm, confident and positive in the face of overwhelming odds and insurmountable challenges. They're all confident, intelligent women who even when powerless to stop something still try to do just that. And that's what makes them all strong.

FFXI doesn't have damsels in distress, only heroines that rely on the strength of their allies.

Telera: Personally, I'm hoping that SE makes an offline version of FFXI at some point. It really wouldn't take much for them to toss in something like FF12's party system, tweak some quests (NPC, for example) and enemies; make crafting more accessible, and of course take out much of the grinding. Would be a huge game out of the gate, and they already have most of the resources done. Plus that would probably be able to fix FFXI's role as the black sheep of the series, and get people to truly appreciate just how awesome it is as a game, if not an MMO.

The best you could hope for would be private servers which are already being worked on to an extent. but a truely offline FFXI would be kinda...pointless.
