Phalanx doesn't do the same thing as coccoon? I thought it did damage reduction, the same as coccoon.

No, cocoon gives 50% more Def, while Phalanx gives a per hit dmg reduction.

I do not have blu lvled so I may be wrong but I know Phalanx is tied to enhancing skill and absorbs a certain % of dmg according to your amount of skill. (I don't do numbers but I know someone who does..........ARMANDOOOOO!) So its more a cousin to Stoneskin if anything.

Cocoon just increases your defense. And there is probably some mathmatical thingie that Armando will whip out and be able to tell you exactly how much and all that jazz but thats about all it does is give you more defense.

Anyway, the RDM/BLU has to gear up defensively (DEF, VIT, etc.).
Basically stay alive using Stoneskin, Cocoon, Phalanx, Ice Spikes, Barstone.

Run away when the scorps use Earth Pounder (they bind themselves with this TP move). Also, after they use Wild Rage, they're unable to attack for a short time.
Those are great times to rebuff and cure yourself.

I'd reccommend a full party, especially if it's the RDM's first time supertanking ODS.

Phalanx absorbs a set amount of damage per hit, after all other damage reduction takes place (DEF, shield, -damage% effects like Earth Staff, etc.). It absorbs (Enhancing Skill/7.5) - 10 damage for every hit you take.

A RDM/BLU packing Coccoon and Phalanx with a fair amount of damage reduction gear (Earth Staff, Jelly Ring, maybe some Darksteel+1 armor) can take a lot of 0 damage hits even without Stoneskin up. Probably 0 damage for at least the first two or three scorpions really.

Forgot to mention that I use Tavnazian Tacos (the best food for RDM/BLU).
Also, Don't use Jelly Ring for this fight, Earth Pounder is a magical attack and it can pack quite the punch.

I used my Joyeuse and Acheron Shield instead of an Earth Staff, though I have capped Sword and Shield merits.
Definately use Genbu's Shield if you have one.

I really need to save up and get me a Cheviot's Cape (-5% Physical damage, -10% at night)

Really, you don't even need a tank... We 5 manned it last night: sam/nin, sam/dnc (shoulda subbed nin, but oh well), sam/nin, drg/whm, rdm/blm. We were going to 4 man it without one of the sam's, but he showed up right before we went in so we waited for him. we could've 4 manned it...
