New 'Welcome Message'

Is anyone else getting annoyed with the new welcome message that SE seems to have implemented? It's one thing to be alerted when server maintenance is going on, but quite another to see things like...

"Announcing the 'Final Fantasy XI 14-Day Free Trial'! (NA players only)"

and

"Blazing Buffaloes: or How West Sarutabaruta Was Won"

and

"First Accessory in the 'Final Fantasy XI Players' Collection' Line Now on Sale! (EU players only)"

I mean really... am I supposed to care about half these things when I log on with my mules to check my gardening?

Well, the way I see it is this:

Its better than people logging in and asking what's going on with the game. I'm sure some still will ask, but now we have a prompt with the latest news, encouraging to go check, so they'll feel even more like a dumbass when people have to tell them.

I don't know, i don't really mind it, although I wish that it would be region specific to your game. Like since i'm not in Europe it wouldn't tell me the Europe message, and vice versa about the north American only trial

It's not like it's a burden or anything. It doesn't get in the way or hinder your gameplay in any way, so it can only be beneficial.

If you don't like it, just think of how it's done in other mmorpgs. SE could always have the update news pop up as you're trying to log in.

Unless POL has been radically changed, it still does this. You might have to click on one or two more things to see the News Update, but it definitely shows you what's going on.

Oh god, I just remembered sitting around with the POL client during maintenance, reading the various updates on progress. Surely I had better things to do with my time.

I like it. It's not as if it harms anyone and I'm sure there is probably some way of filtering it or turning it off. That and it's nice to know when maintenance actually is in GMT instead of looking at a news post on the forums and trying to guess what time zone is, how many hours difference it is and whether or not that time zone is in DST.

It would be nice if they would make them region-specific. Maybe shorten the number of times they're displayed (e.g. show any unread ones on login, and only show the three newest read ones for five logins); they'll stand out more if they're not there every time you log in for two weeks.

Other than that, the only reason I'd care is if this is the reason it takes three seconds longer for /mailbox to work now. *shakefist*

I guess the game is in good shape right now if this is the worst thing we have to complain about. You could file this under pet peeve, which hey we already have a thread for.

No, a little in game message that doesn't affect me in anyway possible at all doesn't really bother me. I think people these days just like something to bitch about.

It's a minor annoyance I suppose, but I do kind of hate how it lags me a bit when I first log in, kind of like the Ballista messages scrolling onto my screen, making me frozen in time until they're done scrolling.
