Yoo no have want of Qiqirn race being playable? Why yooooo no like the Qiqirn? Being Qiqirn is woooooonderful. Yoo wooould love it. We have shiny-shiny, bright, sharp eyes, giving us sooooper Wide Scan. And for a few clink-clink, we give you biiig info, yes?

Being a roleplayer I already had the race for my character worked out beforehand. Everyone knows that race makes no difference for classes in the long run since gear and skill makes the bigger difference. I know some awesome Galka BLMs and some terrible Taru BLMs for example. So race is mainly down to things such as aesthetics, personal choice, roleplaying and so on.

That being said it would be nice to take other races for a spin without having to pay for and level up a whole new character. I wouldn't mind trying Galka purely because Galka WHMs look so hilariously out of place. That and by slapping a subligar on a Galka you get to scare off insecure teenagers who insist on only using AIM speak and think it's big and clever to swear constantly in shouts and party chat so it's win-win.

I really appreciate everyone's thoughts. I've had some downright nasty attitudes elsewhere where I've inquired about this, so it's really nice to see some positive attitudes, even if some disagree. =)

For those who truly don't want to be another race full time, but just want to "try it on," there is a Windower plugin that lets you change the appearance of your character when you load it. I think it's called Plastic Surgeon. That way Firewind up there can try being a Galka for a day. No one else would see your change, but you'd have fun with it then go back to whatever you usually are.

I'll have to try that out next time I can access FFXI thanks. I've heard that it can be quite buggy which put me off from trying to use it but being able to just "try it on" as you put it sounds like fun anyway.

It's a good plugin. I use it here and then when I want a change. It hasn't been buggy for me at all. I think it's predecessor, RaceConverter, was, but I haven't had a problem with PlasticSurgeon. =)

I don't think a race change option would be that great. Maybe a one-time option of some such, but it'd be weird; especially with race-specific armor.

What I would love instead, is the ability to change your hair style and colour, maybe once a month through a quest or something. That'd be sweet.

I use it to fish as a mithra.

I just can't stand the way my character looks fishing.

personally, I find the entire "change race" idea completely idiotic. However, I wouldn't mind it, as long as SE completely obliterates the differences between races, from a mechanics standpoint. No Taru MP bonus or Galka STR. Make them all equal statistically. Honestly, that's not too big of a deal, considering they all become rather similar anyway. Make RSE sort of a second set of starter gear, maybe something which is well suited to level capped areas and generally balanced.

Major problem I see with changing race is that one COP mission. What would happen if you change in the middle of that?

They could always reset the mission, or have you complete it beforehand.

And regarding RSE, they could handle it in the same way as the world transfer. Any RSE from your race gets converted into the new race, just like a linkshell is changed into an unopened one.
