  • A simple question

    Hi!
I'm new to Final Fantasy XI and I've got a pretty simple question. I'm interested in three jobs, which are Corsair, Puppetmaster and Scholar, and was just wandering which of these three is the least and the most popular. Could anybody give me a hand, please?

I'm going out on a limb here and I may or may not be stoned for my correct or incorrect knowledge.

Scholar is the newest job added in Wings of the Goddess Expansion Pack, Puppetmaster and Corsair were both added in Aht Urgan's Expansion Pack which was the one before WotG. I can only speak for what I've seen on my server, Dancer and Scholar were both added in the same update and percentage wise there are about 60-70% more Dancers on our server than Scholars. Scholar is a little easier to level for people who already have high level mage jobs because most likely they already have the majority of the spells, and they also probably have alot of magic related skillups from them as well.

Corsair is sorta like Bard, they both are team support members who cast beneficial effects on the party. Both of them get parties pretty fast because DD's can always use Accuracy/attack bonuses and mages always need a Refresher. Problem with COR is it is kinda expensive if you are just starting out, you have to buy bullets and equipment that will enhance your Ranged Accuracy. I think that may be the reason why there arent alot of them on my server, but the ones that are there pretty much are all 75.

Puppetmaster is kinda a misunderstood class, PUP uses H2H and has a controllable puppet that the PUP uses to aid him in battle. PUP, like Corsair is kinda expensive because you have to not only buy gear for yourself, but you have to get attachments for the automaton and frames that make the auto function differently. I know for sure there are a few different types of frames including mage and melee frames, i think theres also a Ranger type one but I am not sure. We have a 75PUP in our linkshell, and he can do some pretty awesome things with his Auto Mage frame casting cure 5's on him and also party members when their HP drops to a certain low. The only problem with my last statement is, theres a cooldown period between spells, and alot of times, the Auto's main objective is to keep the PUP alive. I remember once me and him went to Delkfutt's tower to kill mobs that dropped Pallas's spawn item. Our HP around was about the same (about 40%) even though I had hate from a Gigas, and instead of curing me it cured the PUP lol, so I ended up dying. There are probably about as many Scholars out there as there are Pups, but i think that the majority of them are just Casual pups and not ones that are planning to take it to 75 right away. BTW the reason I said it was a misunderstood class, was because I used to think that PUP was kinda like BST in the way that it had something to help him fight and that they soloed majority of the time. Now that I know a little bit more about them, I believe the reason they solo is because they don't get parties as much on the job as they should.

In order of most played to least played I'd probably say Scholar > Corsair > Puppetmaster.

      Re: A simple question

On our server I'd turn it around a bit and say Corsair is a little bit more popular than Scholar, at least as far as people taking the job all the way to 75. A lot of people level scholar now, but stop at 37 and use it as a sub job. At least that's the trend I see pretty much. Personally if I ever leveled SCH I'd only take it to 37 too.

      Well maybe. :3

There's only a handful of puppetmasters on our server at any given time, though that number has increased bit more now since I last played with the job. And I'm seeing lots more folks bringing their automations out in Campaign lately.
We know the characters aren't real, we just don't care. :3

        The simple answer is:

Corsair and Scholar tie for most popular of the three with good showings on all servers, but which is more popular depends on the server.

Puppetmaster is one of the least popular jobs at the moment as I believe it's the least understood.

          Re: A simple question

I would say that Corsair and Scholar are about as popular as each other, which is to say, they're not very popular at all given that most people think that Bard is better than Corsair, and that Black Mage, White Mage, or Red Mage are better than Scholar. These two jobs are really quite good in their own right but suffer due to community perceptions.

Scholar is coming up in a big way though and I think that we will see a lot of Scholars turning up and performing the same role as Black Mages sometime in the next year, but at the moment, people are a little scared to go with the Scholar option when there are much safer ones available.

Puppetmaster is even less popular than Corsair and Scholar, if that were even possible. Most Puppetmasters only level the job as something of an accomplishment, and after they have it at 75, it will never be used for anything important, and only gets pulled out in situations where what job you are doesn't really matter that much. It suffers greatly due to community perceptions of it being crap, and also because it actually is crap due to many restrictions placed upon the master's skill caps and gear choices. The puppet itself is quite strong, capable and versatile, but people would much rather be directly in charge of their own actions instead of only being able to influence what their puppet decides to do. My linkshell leader has PUP75, which he levelled entirely solo because there's no chance you will ever be invited to an event as Puppetmaster, and he only gets on his PUP very rarely, outside of soloing.
