Re: Any help for a roleplayer?
Well, there's an overall theme of self-discovery to the overall story, and a lot of the core characters have developed unusual and plot-heavy background elements, though most of us actually RP as more than one character, and we're living lives that are complicated on more levels than just being caught up in the main plot. I'm not sure I can do it justice in a quick synopsis, but I'll try introducing a few characters and the kinds of complications and roles regarding them:
Kumei (Tarutaru F) - Grew up as a pickpocket in Bastok Mines after being orphaned, losing one foster parent and running away from another. Has some abandonment issues. Had some mysterious elements surrounding her birth parents. Her own personal storyline ties in with moogles and would be difficult to explain. Definitely not one of the more mundane characters in the group
Kamiel (Tarutaru M) - Raised in San d'Oria by the Royal Knight who failed to protect his birth father during the Crystal War and who took his mother in as his ward. Does not have a personal storyline per se, but tends to serve as a central viewer/participant for the RP as a whole. His wiki page is pretty well written (and apologies for the state of the wiki as a whole, we never really found time to flesh it out much), so that may help in getting a sense.
Koren (Hume F) - Daughter of a Bastokan diplomat, she was an early adventuring companion of Kamiel's, though her abilities have progressed more slowly, so they don't train together as often as they used to. Her plot complications are largely concerned with the political struggles between nations, and the San d'Oria missions will be significant for her. Has a somewhat more cynical outlook than Kamiel, but is most concerned with preserving the peace between the nations.
Voldai (Kumei's NPC fellow, Galka) - a former companion of Kumei's birth father, something of a mild genius bruiser archetype, though he insists he was most definitely not the brains of the group.
Overall, there's a definite weirdness-factor surrounding the core cast (Kumei, Kamiel, Staccato, formerly Sherinmir); less so with many of the auxiliary characters. We live as part of the world of Vana'diel as defined by the game's story, but we also have our own stories, some of which are fairly involved. We've tried to keep the story arcs from overrunning the whole RP, but I can't say we've been wholly successful; it can sometimes be hard to keep casual RP going during or between arcs when it takes 2-3 months to finish scenes consisting of a week or less IC time, and then we have to lapse through a lot of IC time to get back up to the 'present'. This has been a major factor in our finally giving up on 1:1 time correspondence (we're now on 1:2, and that change happened around March or April I think, so it's probably roughly late June now for us...).
