OK, so I finally got a Linkshell that plays during my times. Irony of ironies, it's mainly Japanese. So, I remember having a link for a site that translated basic phrases and some minor conversation topics from English to Romanji Japanese. I just can't seem to find it. Anyone have anything that's along those lines? I'd like to be able to at least communicate somewhat with my new LS, y'know?

Yeah, that'll work just fine, I think. Copy Pasta and I'll prolly sound like a loon, but it'll be serviceable if I can convey my thoughts clearly to my LS.

I was still thinking there was a site that had listed common Japanese phrases used in FFXI, but this'll work for me just fine.

Well most commonly used phrases in FFXI are in the auto-translate function, so if you can find a site which displays the auto-translate phrases in Japanese then you'll be set.

Other than that there are a few things you can do to ease communication. At the very least learn the kanji for the different jobs so you know if you're being spoken to or not. I'm assuming you know all the obvious phrases like 'yoroshiku', 'tadaima', 'okaeri', 'itterasshai' and such. As far as basic phrases and the like go, you should pick them up along the way. Also you specified romaji - if you can't actually read Japanese then you're going to be in trouble.

Also don't rely too heavily on BabbleFish because one day you'll get caught with your pants down and sound like a complete pillock.

No, it won't. Babel Fish is a horrible translator, most of the stuff that comes out doesn't remotely resemble what was put in. For example:

"Hello guys, how is everyone?"
Through Japanese(and back again):
"Is just a little everyone continued what?"

As for the common Japanese phrases...

Babelfish gems from translating JP FFXI pages:
"Treat it nicely" - Reward
"Triumphant Return March of the Glory" - Victory March
"It Returns" - Back

Babelfish is not very good at what it does.

I think this is what you might be interested in

contains many common used chats, greetings, etc etc etc. It is not the best but I suggest starting with.

Hajimemasite, Jitsuha nihongo anmari shirimasen. "Shigemo's FF11 Guide" wo tsukatteru dakedesu.

Means roughly nice to meet you, I don't know much japanese I am using Shigemo's FFXI translation guide.

I use this page whenever i am in a JP group, they really appreciate it and will use english more liberally if you make some form of attempt to communicate outside of auto translate as most of them are poorly traslated japanese side into wierd things that are often insulting. (I.E the /check think which shows as stares at you fixedly on the JP client.)
