    Re: FFXI running in Wine. (Progress! Screenshots!)

    Funny how a game so heavily built around player communication, and teamwork. We were all just thrown on whatever server. It's more the language, and time barrier then anything else.

    As for Jpn parties, #uck them. Serious, I can count on 1 hand how many times I partied with them and still have room to pick my nose.

    Nin75, Bst75. Drk61, War61, Rdm40, All other jobs are 37. All 3 starting city missions completed. All Zilart missions completed. All CoP missions completed. TouA completed.

      I never got to stay any Japanese parties. They'd take one look at my non-HQ gear, and boot me. (This is after I'd ride all the way to the camp and dismount.)

        That's funny. My incredibly average gear has always been accepted and I've gone on to get lot of XP with jp parties. Hmm.

        But I do think regional servers would encourage segregation too much. And Feba makes an incredible point when he mentions people who keep odd hours.

        But seriously. What's the point of regional servers? My server has plenty of room for JPs, NAs, and EUs. When I'm occasionally online during EU time (I honestly don't even know what time that is, but I've found myself in plenty of parties where I'm the only person who doesn't use metric), get this -- I'm happy to have them there. Having 4000 people on at high time and 62 at the more awkward hours would be a serious drag.

        This has nothing to do with Wine...

            See what Feba said. You do this, I would choose an EU server. For close to 2 years, my high-time was 1st shift -- noon for me is "coming home from work" time for you, no? And now that I keep normal hours, my schedule's changed. Now I'm stuck on an EU server. Except for the occasions where I'm back in EU time for a day, it's now completely empty. If I want to server transfer? I lose my friends. Maybe it doesn't matter to you, the same as you don't care who you're playing with as long as they keep your hours. But this is a social game and I enjoy the social aspects very much.

Just Euros, for example, would have a far greater chance of finding people on at the sime time and be able to achieve more compared to how it was at launch when we were spread everywhere.
            So would it be accurate to say this is actually a population problem, then? That there are too many servers for the EUs to fill out?

            Be honest, what percentage of the Japanese playerbase do you think would have chosen to play on an NA server if they'd been there at launch and what percentage would choose to play on one now if they implemented them? Fact is, nearly every other MMO has regional servers so players can choose their server with the expectation they'll be playing with people in their timezone regardless of race. For me, it's not a, "I don't want to play with damned Yanks" thing, it's more of a, "I bought this game and I'd like to be on a server with people who play predominantly during my core hours". If my, or anyone else's hours of playing change, then I can server transfer if there is a significant impact on my gaming experience. I don't see why this is such a hard concept for people to grasp.

            Ultimately it just hurts their subscription numbers because I know many people who have refused to play this and future S-E MMOs if they refuse to implement regional servers.
            I'm glad that S-E didn't make the servers regional so that I would have a chance to play with JP players who I know would be xenophobic if not for this contact. Maybe NA are more xenophobic (we love that word in this thread) than EU, but I think you're being a bit prejudice by assuming our cultures have this problem more than yours. Oh the irony.

            None of your arguments make sense to me. Try being a little more insulting. Maybe if I took Feba's approach of calling bullshit on the words you type, I'd get a little less flak in return.

              I don't know how this thread got so horribly off topic but thats enough about the regional servers subject. If you'd like to start a new thread to debate the apsects, please feel free to do so. Anymore posts on the off topic subject will be deleted. Otherwise, get back on the subject of FFXI running in Wine.

                What is this FFXI-Wine thing?

                On my slow home computer at the moment so I dislike going to untried sites that take forever to load.

                  Wine, basically, is a bit of software that lets you install and run Windows programs in Unix/linux.

                  For (I think) the first time, someone has managed to get FFXI up and running with it.

                              For those of you that have the old cd versions of the game (like I have 9 discs in total: 1 pol, 3 ffxi, 1 zm, 2 cop, 1 toua (dvd) and 1 wotg (dvd)) and run into trouble with not being able to umount a disc to load in the next or umount then the install wont recognize the next disc I've found that running the install from within the wineconsole works without trouble.

                              $ wineconsole cmd
                              $ d: //or whatever your cdrom is

                              Then when it asks for the next disc
                              $ eject

                              Wait until it mounts the disc then click OK on your install
