    Re: What is "HNM"?

Spirits Within is magical damage. Just very constant magical damage. How do I know this? Because Spirits Within is effected by the NM building magical resistance SE implemented to kill Manaburns.

Spirits Within can be, and is, neither of those things. Just because all currently existing Blue Magic spells are one or the other doesn't mean everything has to be either or.

And by the way, I'm not a Blue Mage, I'm a Paladin as of this posting.

YM, MAB having an effect is not a necessary condition for something to be magical. Just look at Skillchain damage, breath damage, additional effects on weapons, etc. The way I see it for something to be magical it simply has to be resistible or be able to have its damage reduced through Shell/-Magic Damage.
So what about 1000 Needles? It's magical Damage but not affected by Shell or Mab.

1000 Needles is physical when used by mobs.

I don't know about the BLU spell because it sucks and no one uses it.

You could consider it magical if you want. Or you could say that NMs build resistance to both magical and "spiritual" damage.

While it may be a TP move, I thought 1000 needles always did 1000 dmg regardless of any kind of defenses (outside of stoneskin to absorb damage). If that's the case how is it physical? I know shell doesn't affect it and I know it can't be dodged.

And personally, I'd rather classify something as "Magical" then create a whole new type of damage just for the one attack.

We're really only classifying it as "not magic" because it doesn't behave like magic. If neither Magic Attack Bonus nor Magic Defense Bonus nor Shell/-Magic Damage Taken nor TDMA have any effect whatsoever, then, at the very least for all practical purposes, it's not magical, plain and simple. At the same time, it's not physical (gets through Invincible). Therefore, it must be something else, or at the very least neither of the above. Spirits Within is a unique type of damage all on its own category by its lonesome, and for S-E to pander to that category of damage only one move in the game fulfills with something like, say, -Spirit Damage Taken gear, that would be ludicrously situational; I could probably count the number of mobs that use SW on one hand.

As for 1000 needles, Sentinel and Earth Staff affect the mob variety. Enough said.

That statement reminded me of something I encountered as a BLM. Doesnt Ariman(one eyed flying mobs) have a move that makes them invincible to magic? Magic Shield I think it is called(someone correct me if I am wrong). That would be a perfect test for Spirits Within. If Spirits Within does 0 damage then it would be magical, and if it does damage then it would not be magical.

                Re: What is "HNM"?

Magic Shield doesn't make them invincible to magic, it just allows them to resist spells. You can still use a magic WS on them and it'll go through.

It is kind of a pain to do but you can verify with Bastok Mission 9-2 the Shadow Lord. Wait until he changes to the "immune to magic" form and use Spirits Within. The BCNM can be solo'd by a PLD and a BLM.
