I've had this gamer for well since it came out, i was only young then and mother goose wouldn't pay for the subscription.
Now being 18 i pulled it out, and having sat for 5 hours (1.5 hours to go) of updates im starting to play.

I was wondering, what is the best server to play on, the most newbie friendly?

All of the servers are more or less the same, in terms of populations, newbie to end-game ratios, attitude, economy, and so forth. Just pick whichever one has the most cool sounding name, in your opinion. Or pick randomly, like I did. That's how I wound up on Cerberus. (Granted, that was back before we were allowed to choose at all.)

Daos pretty much hit it on the head. To be honest i joined 11 due to a few coworkers, and ended up on the Unicorn server. Its personal prefrence. If you play for a few weeks and don't like it, pay the 25 bucks and change servers to your liking. If your intrested Unicorn server, Caleus is my name in game. If not, best of luck. Im sure most of DiV can help out where i cant. Good luck to ya!

Once you get to level 18, you can do a quest which will let you use another job as a sub job (secondary job) . Your secondary job will always be half the level of your main job (primary job) but rounded down. (i.e. level 24 Red Mage/ 12 White mage or level 25 Red Mage / 12 White mage)

Your sub job will not gain any exp from battles (i.e. if you are leveling your Red Mage as a Main job and your White Mage as a sub job, your White Mage will not gain any experience points). It is possible to have a level 24 Red Mage / 1 WHM but you should never let your sub-job get below half of your main jobs level. You will need to level your sub job by making it you main job and getting experience points. Each job needs to be level separately as a main job.

A made it a rule to level a job I plan to use as a sub job to level 37 (which is half the maximum level any job can achieve...75). This way I dont ever have to worry about leveling it until I want to use it as a main job.

I cannot get the hang of this game.

I can't even cancel the content ID, it says i dont have one, which is odd because i have been allowed to create a character, any ideas?
