So, an anecdote: My friend and I log in around noon to do some farming in SSG. Coral and Abyss Sahagin are my favorite targets. I'll write a guide someday when I stop being lazy. Anyway we farm there happily for about an hour when I see Coral pop over my shoulder, turn to sleep it (so it's not buffed six ways to sunday when we get around to it - whm NM) when out of nowhere this nin pops up and vokes it. Seriously irritating timing but it's not out of the ordinary to have competition, including from anon no-shells such as these dressing in all NQ gear off the AH.
Then my thf friend says she just got a tell from them asking if we're RMT. Her with the relic boots and sirocco kukri, me with the glaringly obvious relic hat, assault jerkin, and joy/justice combo. In short a whole bunch of unsellable timesink gear that no RMT would ever have, certainly not all at once. She asks how many RMT they've seen wearing relic and gets "idk." We continue.
Now, usually I'm a courteous farmer. I ask ahead where all the thieves are before I come to the zone so I can avoid competition, and when someone else shows up at my camp I'll offer to split pops because I hate competing for claims. Heck when I'm alone I'll log and wait for competition to leave at this camp, but when my friend and I have made a date to be here that just isn't happening, and when someone vokes a claim out from under me that just brings out the devil in me. So at once we change our strategy from clearing the room to focusing on NM pops and specifically avoiding clearing potential links that we can deal with a lot better than they can.
I guess some background is in order. This room has two NMs that pop in it about every 25 minutes, Coral and Abyss, whm and brd. There's also a drg NM that pops every 21-24 hours that pops in the exact same place and has a HUGE link radius. All use their jobs' two hour abilities.
So round one they get the first pop and we get the second. Tie. Round two we get the first pop and they get aggro ... and then claim the second NM. Now, they're nin thf whm so honestly there's no reason any players with a shred of skill shouldn't have been able to handle this situation. If the thf had just disengaged the NQ drg sahagin to assist the nin on the NM whm and let the whm repose the add. They'd have had to resleep after benediction and risk losing claim on the drg, but who cares? All it's got is a ~1% chance to drop coral fragments just like everything else in the room. Nope. They decide to either be stupid or greedy or both and fight two mobs with strong AoEs at once two feet from eachother. They wipe. I could've saved them really but I was already pissed off at the claim steal and the did look highly RMTish so I just let survival of the fittest do its thing. Naturally we took the mobs after they died. The whm reraises and calls us RMT again.
At this point I'm feeling pretty bad. Guilt over doing the asshole thing overpowered my frustration at them for .. well .. being in my camp. So I send the whm a tell saying I'm sorry I let them die, told him what they could've done to avoid wiping, my friend and I were going to leave the camp to them, and did he need any help getting his group back on its feet? I know somebody's going to chime in on this and say I was not as nice in these tells as I make it seem, but those who know me know that I own up to my bad behavior and am capable of being quite civil with even someone whose throat I wish strongly to tear out. As I say the last bit about helping them, the three of them run past us towards the exit of the area and I get a tell from the whm that says "{Good bye.} RMT {/blacklist}" ... mmkay I'm starting to feel less bad about being a dick to these guys again. I try to apologize again in /say thinking maybe one of them hasn't blisted me but I get no response. Okay ..
Feeling no longer quite so charitable, I decide to go back on my word and stay at the camp until my friend's inv fills up. No point in leaving while they're weakened anyway. We go about our business; good times ensue. About, idk an hour later they show up again and get into position to claim NMs. First NM pops, they get claim. Second NM pops, they get claim, bot OHAI2U it's Ocean—the NM that brings his own link to the party, and on top of that they manage to aggro a DC mnk for their blink tanks to deal with. About half the fight goes by before the whm realizes repose exists and he has it, and they valiantly manage to take down Ocean and his wyvern with an add in tow without anyone dying. Except that they manage to aggro another drg in the process and subsequently suffer humiliating defeat at the hands of two DC mobs while my thf and I take down Coral. Just wow.
By then we'd been farming for maybe 4 hours so we call it quits to get food and whatnot. The "RMT?" group is raised and resting in the true sound NMs' spawn area when we leave. At least I've convinced myself that they are not actually RMTs. RMTs have more skill than that.
I swear that place makes me an awful person but hey, I'm an awful person with ~160k more gil than I showed up with and got treated to a comedy of errors to boot.
