Account theft

Ok so i see the "story of the day" is account theft, banning and illegal fishing (damn those crafty anglers!) but the question i put to you lovely girls/guys/ones inbetween is that is account theft situated only on the pc due to spyware/key logging or is it across all formats? (i own a 360).

I know the usual rules still apply......e.g. dont be an eejit and give away personal details to some untrustworthy rapscallion. but was wondering if it is possible for these unscrupulous people to hack the 360 for details.

Given that 360 and PS2/PS3 aren't exactly known for web-browsing, getting keylogers and "hacked" on these systems isn't so much of a concern and just being stupid and handing out your information to other people is.

There have been people who have claimed to have been hacked on the consoles, but 10 times out of 10 its some dumbass who passed around thier account info.

No, just because you're on a PS2 or 360 does not automatically mean your safe.

A) They could be stupid and just try and guess your password, which is probably easier for most people then it at first sounds

B) If your account information gets anywhere near a computer, it doesn't matter what platform you play on. (i.e. ffxiah, Linkshell community etc)

C) This did not really warrant another thread.

(A) They'd need to know your account number to even guess your password
(B) Is easily avoided. Anyone with half a brain wouldn't get near FFXIAH with thier account information and the lolLScommunity isn't even worth visiting.
(C) It didn't, but its apparently the new hot topic for people who lost accounts.

Account numbers are random, but are still just alphanumeric. I can't remember how long they are but assuming they're 8 characters, WF865D7H could very easily be someone's account number and I'd just need to find the password now. Specific people aren't being targeted so no one is looking for specific accounts. Account login names are often the same as the main, so a good starting point for taking your account would be trying to log in as OMGWTFBBQKITTEN. It might not work with you, so I'd just move on. For a lot of people however, it would work and I'm back to again just guessing passwords.

Not putting account info online is easily avoided, but so was getting the keyloggers in the first place and look how that turned out. If a console player believes they are untouchable, the odds that they are going to do stupid things goes up.
