Avatars are the FFXI name for summoned monsters. Final Fanatsy has a long line of Summoners with the one of the most famous being Rydia from Final Fantasy 4(the Nintendo DS remake hits July 22 if you feel like looking into it).
Avatar battles in FFXI are mostly to gain the right to use that summon creature as the FF job "Summoner". They also have other rewards for players who aren't really into playing that paricular job. Some like fighting Barahmut and Carbuncle Prime are just part of advanced quests with some fun rewards.
Carbuncle himself is the first avatar most summoners get and he's really a reward for unlocking the job...so he's easy ^^Shadowneko's FFXI Newbie Guide 2009

As explained above, Avatars are FFXI's version of summons or guardians. However, for the newly starting adventurer, you have very little to worry about avatars. Just worry about getting signet and not dying from Plaguebreath.Originally posted by Kookyboy View Post
