RDM's subbable abilities complement SCH main very well, to the point you'll rarely be expected to sub anything else once you get Accession. BLM's usefulness 20-39 stems from the fact that SCH has no native Magic Attack Bonus trait, which /BLM provides at SCH20; by 40 /RDM is providing this.
There's no reason to consistantly sun RDM until 68. Before then, you don't have access to Stoneskin unless you're subbing /WHM. Additionally, you don't have access to Phalanx for a long time anyway.

The Stoneskin/Accession combo goes a long, long way in the career of a SCH, especially in situations where SCH is called upon to main heal.

Really, SCH/BLM and SCH/WHM are interchangable until about level 55, play it how you feel. Since Colibri are the standard target for several levels from 55+, /WHM is preferable until you can grab the benefits of Blink/Stoneskin/Phalanx together under /RDM at level 68. After 68, there's no reason to go back from /RDM to any other subjob.

      Re: New player duo suggestions?

Back on topic... it's probably worth mentioning what jobs don't work well for duo XP -- namely, Thief. THF's effectiveness depends on positioning relative to the monster and the rest of the front line. It's impossible to set up conditions for Sneak Attack or Trick Attack outside of a larger party context. Most anything else can be made to work in a duo, though, if you're that dead-set on it (though in Bard and Corsair's case I'd say you're not quite getting the full job experience if you never participate in a full party). -- Pteryx

I understand what you're saying Pteryx. I do intend to party as much as possible, and since I'm pretty sure I'm taking RDM to at least 30, I imagine I won't have too hard of a time finding groups. THF, COR, and BRD never really caught my eye too much, so I'm not real worried about that. I'm a bit concerned about my ability to find groups once I get to 30, as I then intend to switch to SCH as my first advanced job. We'll see what happens, though. I just want the duo to be there so I'm not constantly stuck soloing, if it's even possible as a SCH. I've read that RDM are decent soloers, so I'm not too concerned on that front.

          RDM solo ROCKS!

By the time your upper 20's you will be able to solo T mobs that will wipe most jobs. Sub /NIN and RDM becomes an almost broken solo'er.

            Re: New player duo suggestions?

Id suggest BLM from about 20 on wards you and your friend can solo enemy beastmaster pets for very good exp. This can be done all the way till aboulevel 70 when you will need to solo qirin's in ToAU areas.

Alternativley RDM can fill this role as well, early on you wont lag far behind in terms of a nuke to nuke ratio. When it begins to show you can't keep up your BLM friend will begin to take pets down in 1-2 nukes. Level 40+ you can provide refresh to keep chains as high as possible. Also during this whole thing you cn provide bind's and gravity post 25 to protect your BLM partner if a resist occurs and the pet charges you.

Another good option would be to take a melee job and /dnc this will provide you with decent healing power and damage out put. Or you can run as a DNC as well.

To be honest anything has the possibility of duo, you just need to not over camp and if you focus on the pets (summoner and beastmen enemies) you can earn great exp with minimal risk.

              Re: New player duo suggestions?

He's now decided to go SMN when he attains a higher level. I'll probably still go with SCH, but now I'm not entirely sure what job I want to raise first. I'm still thinking RDM with maybe a side of WHM. I'm unsure of how good SCH/RDM would be- can anyone provide insight?

I'm also not sure what job my friend is going to start as, though I'm sure it's gonna be either BLM or WHM.

SCH/RDM is the preferred combo at high levels, though you'll find /WHM and /BLM have more use at-- didn't I say something about this recently? Hmm...

Aye, you did, my apologies, haha. I'm almost positive I'm gonna take RDM to 18, probably followed by BLM up to 18 while my bud presumably levels his WHM. After that, I'll hop back over to RDM, take him up to 30+, then switch over to SCH and push onward with that.

I think I'm planning this way too much >< - I should cut back and just see where my gameplay takes me
