I play ffxi on a ps2 and have it hooked up to my HDTV. Is there a device i can use to make the picture appear in HD quality or even PC quality? I currently just have it hooked up with the standard connections that came with the PS2. Thanks!

Re: PS2 on HDTV
Most games are 480i on the PS2 and even with a component cable it just won't do much to help. PS2 FFXI actually looks worse on a HDTV because it accentuates the flaws by stretching the image.Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. Re: PS2 on HDTV
Since I have not tried this I won't say for certain but no it should not help that much. The edges might be a bit smoother but there should be little difference. If you are going to buy a system for FFXI, invest in a 360. If you are adamantly against that, then invest in a cheap pc. The pc requirements for playing FFXI are considerably low considering most games nowadays. PS2 FFXI just wasn't made for HDTV.Originally posted by FebaBut I mean I do not mind a good looking man so long as I do not have to view his penis.Originally posted by TaskmageGod I hate my periods. Re: PS2 on HDTV
ALL games on the PS2 are standard NTSC (people trying to be fancy calling it 480i). Now then, I have seen people claim the PS2 will do 480p if you have the right cables. These would be component cables, not the standard RCA cables the PS2 came with.
The only thing you can do is use the best cables, which are these Buy PS2 & PS3 Component Video Cables (HD Component Cables) - Playstation 2 - [PS2]
I've really only ever seen it make a difference in one game, that being the opening movie for Gran Turismo 4.

Re: PS2 on HDTV
ok this is how i would explain it
if you use a vcr on a crt tv thats a 4:3 its gonna look fine hook it up to a 1080p tv and you get the idea it wasnt made for hd so its gonna look like poop

"The standard called for 525 lines of picture information in each frame, and 30 frames per second; the frame rate was later slightly adjusted for the color standard" NTSC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The 480 denotes a vertical resolution of 480 vertical scanning lines, usually with a horizontal resolution of 640 pixels and 4:3 aspect ratio or a horizontal resolution of 854 pixels and 16:9 aspect ratio" 480p - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Also if you install it on PS3, you can get component or HDMI, and turn on upscaling and smoothing. That's about the best you can do, because the PS2 itself can't go higher than 480i/p. That's why it looks terrible. And the only games that I know of supporting off the top of my head the 480p resolution is Socom
And you will never get a ps2 to do anything near a pc in resolution and quality. The 360 only does 720p in ffxi with upscaling, and does a texture resolution around 1024x1024 *like the pc version but you can make it higher on pc to emulate a AA effect* the ps2 does 512x512 half of the pc's default highest texture resolution. On my Sony Wega tv that I have hooked up to my pc runs at nearly a perfect 720p setting (1280x768) and I run ffxi in 1280x740 w/ 1600x1600 texture resolution vs the ps2 max 854x480 (if ffxi supports 480p) and 512x512 texture resolution. I don't mean to burst your bubble but ffxi will never look good on a ps2 or ps3. It is just simply that they made the game to low end for the ps2. But thats as high as they could make it to run along side the pc at the time. This was what 5 years ago? So don't buy a ps3 just to make ffxi look good, you can build a computer (I did recently for my buddy in town, am2 x2 4800+ 1gig ram 8600 gt would run ffxi laps around the ps2) for 500$, the price of your ps3 plus you can do more with it then just play ffxi.

Re: PS2 on HDTV
When I had my PS2 I had been using S-video. Using that it looked the same as it does on the PC.
Also to note i wasn't using a TV i was using one of my projectors. I'm not sure if that'll make a difference. I don't think it would.

If NTSC is 525 lines and SDTV is 480, why does SDTV play on my NTSC TV? The answer just happens to be in those two links:
"480i is usually used in countries that conventionally use NTSC (North America, Japan), because the 525 transmitted lines at 60 hertz of analogue NTSC contain 480 visible ones."
And for a few more technical details:
"NTSC color encoding is used with the M format (see broadcast television systems), which consists of 30/100.1% (or approximately 29.97) interlaced frames of video per second. Each frame consists of a total of 525 scanlines, of which 486 make up the visible raster. The remainder (the vertical blanking interval) are used for synchronization and vertical retrace, and can contain other data such as closed captioning and vertical interval timecode."
So why does my NTSC TV display 480i? Because it's the same damn thing.
EDIT: 480p isn't HDTV.

Side note: If your ps2 can do this then I want my 914$ back for my computer upgrade.

Re: PS2 on HDTV
My advice:
find a cheap computer, such as Newegg.com - Acer Veriton VM261-UC4300P Celeron 430(1.8GHz) 512MB DDR2 80GB SiS Mirage 3 Windows XP Professional - Desktop PCs
Toss a decent graphics card in it, such as Newegg.com - EVGA 256-P2-N733-LR GeForce 8400GS 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (try to avoid anything with Vista, at least, since that's a lot more crap than you need to deal with for what you're basically going to turn into a game console)
Get a DVI -> HDMI converter to connect the graphics card to the TV.
Hook the PC's sound up to your stereo (you might want to get a dedicated sound card for this, but that's not something you need immediately. You can always get that later if the sound bugs you)
set up the PC so that you can use it on the HDTV, in high def. I'm not exactly sure on this process, but it's not difficult. Google it if you're completely lost.
Get a copy of the Vana'diel Collection 08 for PC.
install FFXI. look up (on this site) information on registry editing to increase your resolution to whatever the maximum resolution is on your HDTV.
In FFXI, go into the menu, config, and make sure that your aspect ratio is correct.
All that will get you a computer that should play FFXI in high def with no problems, for around $300, without having to mess up your current PC. You can also mess around with this PC to have some fun, such as by installing other PC games on it, or emulators. MAME, emulators for various consoles, and Stepmania hooked up to an HDTV can be very fun, and at basically no cost (stepmania you'll want to get USB dance pads, but that's it).
