    'ello!

As you can most likly guess I am new to FFXI. I have not yet started to play but I wanted to insure that I get the best start that I possibly can. As you know MMOs can be quiet difficult to start in, so many important choices left to a new mind! Starting job, starting race...things that will basically determine how the game will be for you. I want to make sure that I can make the best decision. This is why I am looking for a teacher :]

It would be awesome if someone would lend a hand in helping me answer some tough questions that I have, not to mention it would mean alot to me. Now I am sure some of you are thinking "just read the guides" but guides can't carry a conversation which is ever so important in learning.

    I plan to:
    Join this persons server
    Talk to them daily
    Become a good friend
    Ask tons of questions =p

So if you think that you could be kind enough to pass your knowledge to a newbie like me it would mean soooooo much ;]!

Oh one more thing......I have xbox live and I plan to play on xbox. So maybe we could talk there? :]!! (halo 3 rox)

    My handle is Tokagawa

I'm not on xbox, but you're welcome to join Bahamut and be my friend. Character's name is Murphie, just like my username here.

I'm always happy to help out and answer any questions, no matter how simple.^^

Of course, if you don't choose me, that's ok too. There are a number of friendly and helpful people on these forums.

Look at his user title, and forget he ever offered assistance.

            What does "Schadenfreude!" mean?

BTW: Murphie and I seem to have the same cutthroat sense of humor :D

Oh and the finding happiness in others misfortune thing :] its like an exact match haha

            EDIT: I totally just googled "Schadenfreude!" and now I feel like a moron ^.^;

Murphie has no sense of humour.

Re: Seeking a teacher of sorts

One bit of advice, when you decide you need help and are trying to solicit it from others, make sure you use the /tell command to let people know who you are and why you're asking them. For instance: "Hi this is Tokagawa from FFXIonline's forums. I was wondering if you could still help give me advice on..." This will be more likely to elicit responses from us.

Last night, I got a tell from someone on Diabolos consisting of "Hi". Normally, this is almost always a begging request, they're just waiting for me to acknowledge I can hear them before I get the pitch for 200k gil they just know I can spare to help them level. So, I do a search... lvl 1 WAR in Windurst Woods, I'm on the ferry right now. Not sure why they think I'm available from several zones away. After a few seconds of no response from me, they try again with "Hello?" This time I check my friends list and linkshells to see if this might be someone I know's mule. Nope. Several more "Hi"s and "Hello"s followed which I ignored and continued to fish. Perhaps this was someone I knew, perhaps it was someone in one of my shells needing a linkpearl. Maybe they were just looking for advice from a lvl 75 SMN. I'll never know. If they'd bothered to give me some information instead of making things sound like an unneeded charity request, they'd probably have gotten a response.

We're not an unhelpful bunch by and large, but remember that nearly every time an unreasonable request has come in, it has almost always began with "Hi". This is how telemarketers operate. They get you involved into a conversation with them, then make a sales pitch, and you're too polite not to let them finish it. Sometimes you end up buying something because you don't want to make them feel bad. People have learned to apply this to the game, and we've had to learn not to bite on these. If you're making a substantive request for our help/time, be brave enough to lay it all out and give me a chance to say Yes or No up front.

The last time I accosted a complete stranger about something it was: "Hey, I notice you're wearing a goblin coif. I've been looking to have one made, could you tell me who made yours?" I got an immediate response from everyone who wasn't AFK when I asked like this.
