I'm confused, with you I can't tell if you mean it or not, plus I lol'd reading it.

Re: So you want some gilz...

As a career crafter this really does affect me personally.

I work hard, very hard to farm and level my crafts so i can profit on them one day (well i already have them leveled and profiting).

And it sucks really really hard to come back after hours of farming/fishing/crafting, to see someone is just fucking up the market for their own personal gain.

When those few of us crafting certain items are working hard to make some gil, and some a-hole comes along and tries to destabilize the entire market for personal profit, Windy crafters screw them HARD (at least in Windy on Remora). I've had quite a few chats with JP/NA/EU crafters where we've been making solid cash on a certain synth and along comes an idiot who thinks he can screw us all by undercutting (like 50%?!?!?!) the prices we've been working on for weeks; we plot and execute revenge. Undercut us? fine, your merch will be bought (by us) and the price restabilized as quickly as we can - and prepare to farm your own ingredients, 'cus chances are you've pissed enough of us off by now to go and clear out the supply of supplies needed.

Had to quote it because thats how i feel.

        Im kinda disappointed Mrmageo.

MrMageo lets me have ROFLs with my waffles every morning. His posts aren't so much disappointing as they are par for course. Its hard to find someone who could be wrong more consistantly than he is.

Maybe Feba, but that's another matter and a completely different kind of "wrong."

Well, if he thinks he's actually manipulating the market he's probably fooling himself, but you *can* make some gil buying low and selling high, even if you don't control the market, just by knowing it well enough to have a good guess where it's going. As long as the market eventually rises above where it was when you bought, you can make some profit.

If the market is low, it will probably go back up whether you manipulate it or not. This means that if you buy and then try to make the price go up you will usually "succeed", so it's easy to conclude that you're manipulating the market when it's really just regression to the mean.

Be careful doing this around updates though. You don't want to buy a dozen Mezraqs for a low 1.5M each and then Thalassocrat is added and your investment loses 2/3 of its value. (Hey, at least you weren't buying them on margin. Aren't you glad FFXI doesn't have a wall street?)

The main reason I don't do more of this myself is that to make any significant amount at it takes a lot of work watching the markets - time and effort that could just as well be spent farming, or organizing BCNM/ISNM/etc runs, for probably more profit (and definitely more fun - I already have a job). Honestly you can just alternate between meriting and ISNM and make good money with a lot less risk. Most people already have a bunch of seals and IS they aren't using, which means (a) if this is you, you can turn those assets into money, and (b) if this is your friends, they'll probably be glad to join you when you announce you're organizing a run (if their schedules permit).

Oh, one more thing: some items' AH price can fall below their npc sell price. This is tedious but it's a guaranteed return with no waiting and you're not the one paying the AH fee.

No offense, but your 'secret' has been a well known and abused method of making cash since 2004. There is nothing new here.

QFT. This sort of thing doesn't happen enough to effect the market for long periods of time because it's a boring pain in the ass that hardly anybody wants to commit to except in little bursts. You get just as many ripples from sudden spikes in farming/crafting/gardening, and they pass just as quickly. It might be problematic if it were widespread and sustained, but that's never going to happen, because it just isn't rewarding enough for people to jump on en masse, especially if lots of people are doing it (if it were, they would have by now).

Personally, I think we should get out the pitchforks and torches for those bastards who occasionally farm, or spend more time crafting a single synth, for a few hours longer than usual. Those fuckers ruin everything.

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.

What a great idea! OMG! We should all do our bit to screw with the economy.

I bet you also complain when you want to buy something and some idiot has jacked the price up. Go figure where he got that dumb ass idea from.

I'll just stick to my fishing, at least I don't have to worry about the market.

/em runs to the festive storage guy for that pitchfork that I thought was useless
