Re: I think I'm going to quit.

So many of these "i'm quitting" moments...

It's a game you can return to any time and if you have any self control you can play it on and off like any other game. I'll go a week without playing for more than a couple hours then on the next week i'll play like there's no tomorrow then i give it another break then i log in and do some stuff then off again to go about something else and so on and so forth.

Why must there always be a quitting ritual? ._.

Kinda tired of "i quit, gonna delete all my stuff" only to later come back and regret doing so.

Put your account on standby (they dont charge you for that), its what i do when im in the mood for some other activities.

I dont see why people cant have a normal lifestyle and still enjoy FFXI, I'm a full time worker, i do my shopping my cooking my laundry, i walk the dog, i hit the gym for 2 hours every day, i go out for a drink every other day and keep in contact with my family, oh, and i play FFXI, why cant people do the same without quitting the game altogether? (i only know a few people who havent come back after quitting).

I couldnt for the life of me, "quit" FFXI, i don't think unless they come up with a better game that i'll ever completely quit this one, cant really put my finger on it... i guess i dont want to get rid of all that i've accomplished.

Oh how i wish they implemented a pay-per-play system instead of monthly payments.

Sorry got kinda ranty and offtopic-ish (very) there for a minute. I know half the stuff i said doesnt apply to you Evion, sorry

Even though we disagree on Zeitgeist, I agree with Balfree on this. Of course, I'm guilty of "quitting" as well, so I can't really judge. I mean, I will still probably judge, because I'm Murphie, and that's what I do. But I shouldn't.

Re: I think I'm going to quit.

I love the game but it's a reward to me for keeping my life in balance,
rather than unbalancing my life. My game time has it's own priority and it
is not at the top of the list . My wife puts a note on my computer if she wants , or needs something done (family priority #1). I work a job that avgs 60 hrs a week.
(work Priority #2) I have an exercise program I follow to keep in correct weight range. ( health priority #3). I have investments, pay bills, taxes, shopping home maint. wash the car etc (responsible living priority #4) and then........
if i've got all those done, I get to play !! It averages 2 hours a day most days, sometimes a little longer on weekends. Since it's a reward, it's more enjoyable and I'm never bored. Sure, I've played 3 years and I'm only lev 67,
but I enjoy all aspects of the game ( yes! I killed my first chiggo yesterday!)
and with all the game has to offer, I don't forsee ever reaching the end.
Our circumstances are a lot different but maybe, before quitting, you cut back
and see if you can find something in the game that is still challenging and fun.

Thank you all for your posts. I didn't know that I could cancel contect IDs and the character info could still be saved/restored. I will definitely be doing that. I'll see you online again someday.

It's the same reason why some people can't go out and just enjoy a drink without getting hammered or how some people have to smoke 2 packs a day to get by instead of smoking occasionally. Addictions are a personality trait and some will fall victim to it easier then others.

Re: I think I'm going to quit.

I went through a similar thing recently, and I didn't play for about 3 months, I didn't even decide to have a break, it just happened because I had too much stuff going on in my RL. I'm glad I didn't decide to just "quit" and give all my stuff away because luckily when I came back I had the whole of my account intact.

When I came back, I felt a lot better. I had sorted out major problems I was dealing with in my life so I could finally relax. It's a game we love, so obviously it was great playing it again, it felt like I had sunk behind all my friends as most of them had leveled some whole new job to 75 already etc etc but I didn't care. Taking a break took me out of the rat race of having to get everything done so quickly and feeling like I was in some large competition. We don't have to excel through the game as quick as everyone else. Now I think I have a decent balance of RL and FFXI.

There were some drawbacks, my points in my dynamis link were reset, I understand this because I did go awol for months and they did try contacting me but on the plus side a lot of my in game friends were so happy to see me back they helped me with stuff I had wanted to get done for a long time before taking a break like getting my Joyeuse ^-^

Maybe you can do the same, just take a break for awhile and when you come back things will be more balanced for you and it won't feel like your wasting so much of your life on a game (a fantastically awesome game nonetheless) but I'm pretty sure everyone thinks from time to time they're putting too many hours into their game life and not enough in their real life.

12-14 hours a week... about 2/day, or more likely 3-4hours/4 days/week? Thats about what I was doing before, and it felt like a real addiction... Although, you have a 75 PLD, so its different.

A couple of hours a day is not at all what I'd consider an addiction.

Re: I think I'm going to quit.

I've come to the realization lately that at some point I will need to quit the game. Most likely that will happen when something else grabs my attention with a greater force, or I get involved with someone that isn't into the whole gaming thing.

In a way, it's kinda like coming to terms that life itself has an end.

It's only an addiction if it causes you to ignore the more important things in your life like friends, family, school/work and the like. Playing every day for a few hours isn't an addiction, it's a hobby. Playing every day for a few hours while ignoring your friends, who want to go out, or your school/work, by constantly cutting or what have you, is signs that it's an addiction.
