  • Headhunting and You (a mini guide to Freelancers)

So maybe its just Bismarck or other servers are a bit lame about it as well, but not a lot of the freelancers are being used for campaign. Perhaps its just because few people really care about them or maybe because they are unsure of what they do. Well here is a little guide on how to recruit the 14 freelancers and their assistants and what they do.

    What is Headhunting?

Headhunting is a part of Campaign. There are 14 NPCs in the Wings of the Goddess zones who have no affiliation with any nation. However, with enough persistence, these NPCs can be willed over to a nation, given that the criteria for their recruitment is met.

    How to recruit a Freelancer:

Each freelancer NPC has a different requirement to be recruited for your nation. They can involve trading items, gil or talking to them on specific jobs. Upon meeting this requirement, the NPC will have a small bit of dialog recognizing you've meet the requirement. Unfortunately once is never enough. In order to influence the NPC again, you must first zone then return to the NPC. Logging out then logging back in does not work. If you are trading an item or gil to the NPC, you must NOT talk to them first or they will not accept the item or gil. After repeatedly meeting the requirements over and over, you must wait for the Conquest tally to find out if the Freelancer has joined your nation. You will either spot them in Campaign battles for your nation, or they will be located somewhere in the city when not fighting.

    The Freelancers:

As mentioned there are 14 freelancers, many of whom have an assistant that helps them in battle, some with many assistants.

When I say, will relocate to a city after they are recruited, I mean after conquest tally is complete for the week. It won't happen right away.

-The original 10. The first 10 Freelancers introduced with WoTG:

Azima: (a side note, kicking myself over the recruitment method :x)

Recruitment method: Originally located at one of the 4 "present day" exits in North Gustaburg [S]. Moves to a city when recruited. Talk to her with Alchemy Skill 61 or higher to influence her.

In battle: Is a high level BLM/BLU. Able to cast blue magic spells. She can cast Tier V black magic spells for 2000+ damage.

    Babban Ny Mheillea:

Recruitment Method: Trade distilled water to the "Sprout" target in @ E-6 in Meriphataud Mountains (S) but other spots have been reported. Sprout does not leave Meriphataud.

In Battle: Is a Lycopodium and as such uses Mandragora attacks.

Assistants: Is assisted by either the Malboro, Bryher; the Cactaur, Camlin; Abenzo or Darach. Most likely zone determines who is assisting him

    Choh Moui

Aside: Will give meaningless reaction if you trade her pet food biscuits.

Recruitment Method: Starts out in Crawler's Nest [S] at H-8. Throughout the zone there are various ???. One with give you a crimson chigoe. Upon receiving it (this is not a tangible item or key item, its just there) talk to Choh Moui and she'll take it. Zone and repeat. When she is in a city, the ??? will appear there.

In battle: She's a BST. She calls Azo (Spider) and Vahi (Scorpion) to assist her as well as up to 8 Chigoe under certain conditions.

    Dalzakk

Recruitment method: Starts out running around the eastern part of Sauromugue Champaign [S] (Widescan will help). Is influenced by talking to him as a MNK. Will run around a city after he is recruited.

In battle: Only uses one H2H weapon when he fights. Will spam One Inch Punch every 20 or so seconds.

Assisted by Oggi: If Dalzakk takes enough damage, Oggi appear, lecture Dalzakk and will join the fight.

    Duskraven

Recruitment Method: Originally located at F-5 of Battalia Downs (S). Will move to a city when recruited. Influenced by trading him 500 gil.

In battle: Is a DRK and acts just as such, with one exception, can cast Tier IV black magic.

Assisted by up to 5 Dusk Raiders, also DRKs.

    Kagetora

Aside: Will give meaningless reaction if you trade him zinc ore

Recruitment Method: Originally located at Sauromugue Champaign [S]. Will move to a city when recruited. Trade him Shuriken to influence him.

In battle: Will throw shuriken at opponents to attack. Can also make "true" shadows of himself with Utsu.

    Maat

Aside: Will give meaningless reaction if you trade him Maat's Cap (he won't take it though!)

Recruitment method: Appears in one of the starter [S] zones: East Ronfaure (S) (K-4), North Gustaberg (S) (J-7), West Sarutabaruta (S) (I-6). Will move to a city when he is recruited. Trade him a testimony of one of the 15 Pre-ToAU jobs to influence him.

    In Battle: Spams Asuran Fists.

Assistant: Occasionally, Maat's friend, Degenhard, will comes assist him.

    Rainemard

Recruitment method: Starts out in Jugnar Forest [S] at G-5. Will move to a city when he is recruited. Is influenced by talking to him as a RDM.

In battle: Self buffs and melees. His Enspell effects to 250+ damage.

    Titania

Recruitment method: Trading Bottled Fairies to the Fey Spring in Grauberg. Does not appear in cities after she is recruited.

In Battle: Spams Cures on people. Has not been reported directly damaged, so unknown if she attacks.

Assistants: Lots of Fairies. They too spam cures.

(If you don't get this reference, shame on you)

Note: Recruiting Titania adds the extra option of "Reduced EXP loss" from Sigil granting NPCs for your nation.

    Ulla

Recruitment method: Originally located near the South Gustaberg exit in Bastok [S]. Will move to Sandoria or Windurst if recruited by them. Is influenced by trading flowers to her (not Red Roses or Asphodel).

In Battle: Barks orders to Kilhwch. Will occasionally use the skill "Call to Arms", which gives a healthy amount of TP to everyone around her.

Assistants: Kilhwch, one of 3 PLDs who will join to the Hydra Corps. The "last" owner of the Excalibur, will use Knights of Round when Ulla tells him to use a weapon skill.

Possibly assisted by Alfons, though no reported sightings of him yet.

-The New Freelancers: The 4 added in the most recent update

    Achtelle

Aside: Will give meaningless reaction if you trade her a Dragon's Chronicle.

Recruitment method: Originally located near King Ranperre's Tomb in E. Ronfaure [S] at G/H-11. Will move to a city once she is recruited. Is influenced by talking to her as a DRG.

In battle: Calls her Wyvern, Bravo, who is actually a full sized grey "Hurricane Wyvern" type Wyvern.

    Aruehat

Recruitment method: Originally located in one of the many caves in Grauberg. Will move around the caves from time to time. Locations are D-13, D-8, E-10, F-12, I-6, K-7, or K-12. Will move to a city when recruited. Trade her potions and hi-potions to influence her.

In battle: As an Elvaan F, she will pretty much do nothing but act as a good punching bag. However, she can transform into a Wyrm (like Fafnir) and maul and maim. She can use all Wyrm WS including Spike Flail.

    Poroggo Prince

Recruitment method: Near one of the Horototo Towers at F-4 or F-11 in West Sarutabaruta [S], trade the Poroggo Servent Lufaise Flies. Will not relocate to a city after recruitment.

In battle: Acts like any Poroggo mob. When it uses the WS Providence, will gain access to enfeeble-ga spells, including Breakga as well as the spell Death. These spells have been witness to take effect on their targets.

Assistants: 3 Poroggo Servents. These are normal "Frog" type mobs (like when you get hit with Frog Song). They jump and attack, hurray!

    Rongo-Nango
Aside: Will give meaningless reaction if you are from Windurst and talk to him.

Recruitment method: Originally located at H-5 in Fort K-N. Will relocate after he is recruited. Trading him jug pets will influence him.

In battle: Calls up to 5 pets to fight with him: Momowa, a bird; Lerren, a Smilodon; Popochu a dhalmel who spams white magic (and looks like a total doofus). Papako, a Manticore and Jajaro a Buffalo.

    The "Other" 4:

The Beastmen also have 4 Freelancers. Will we be able to recruit them one day? Probably not, but here they are anyway.

    Kaiser Behemoth

Will spam Thunderbolt like its going out of style. Occasionally will cast Meteor. It, however, is very squishy and dies easily.

    Eurytos

You be taking his braclets no more! Is assisted by 2 green Gigas Mercenary.

    Boodlix

Red Armor type Goblin. Is assisted by 3 black armor type Goblin Lansquenet. Its sad since he owns all the Goblin stores in the present.

    Raigegue R d'Oraguille
Its a Corse of course. Does most of the usual corse stuff, casting black magic, ice spikes. Will also warp around the battle field from time to time. Is assisted by 4 Ancient Royal Knight. (Skeletons).

Now get out there and go recruit some freelancers.

Data compiled from personal observations, BGWiki and FFXIclopedia.
