Party's usually need Healers so WHM's tend to get parties fast... I've been invited before I was even completely loaded upon sign-on. Now it won't always be that way, I've had to wait hrs on occasion too, but usually WHM's get parties fast.

First time through you should look at getting a party at 10ish. You will need to get your sub-job items before 18 and they are dropped in the zone you'd be partying in (the Dunes). After that you can either party at 10 again, or solo higher.

And if you want to be a WHM I would party that til 18, get your subjob unlocked, then level either RDM or BLM with WHM as a subjob untill 37, then switch them ( WHM/BLM or RDM ) til 75.

I would, however, recommend soloing to 11 at least on whm. Yes, it's painful. But it's even more painful to get in a group fighting IT+ lizards at lvl 10 when no one has cure2, which whm learns at level 11.

As far as the early soloing? Meat jerky is sold at every starting town and is 100ish gil a piece, gives a solid attack boost. Use a heavy Damaged rating staff or hammer and shield, target anything "easy prey" that moves, and you'll go through the levels rapidly.
