How will they be handling people who have had friends in the game for over a year and technically don't get more gifts? Anyone tried this?

I'm pretty sure you can't get these items if you have already picked your rewards for the new adventurer campaign. My solution was to just invite another friend with a gold pass, even if they don't use their account after the first month, in 40 + 100 days I'll ask to borrow their account, reactivate it then and get the rewards.
