There's only one reason I can think of which would make a RDM engage with a staff: Parrying. (Hey, E Parrying is better than F Shield!) Shouldn't be able to hit AV for non-0 damage much, I'd imagine, so TP shouldn't be an issue.
Can also go with Genbu Shield and Ceremonial Dagger, I guess?

leaving no trace in the water. - Mugaku
In one part of the transcript AV readies Chainspell before actually using it. Maybe it's required for somebody (a RDM) to use the same 2 hour or something during that readying window in order to stun AV's 2hour or something?
Clearly they never came experienced Meteor either.
Also at one point in the transcript somebody cured someone and it restored 0 HP. What's strange about this though is that 4 other people cured the same person, despite (according to the transcript) no damage being dealt to that person. Spamming Cures on a full HP bar? I don't know the relevance of that statement at all, it could be absolutely nothing.
I thought those 0 cures were from Benediction? Or maybe just to wake someone up and they're horrendously inefficient?
Also, 2 hours when AV 2 houred didn't look like they were the same ones, typically. (having only watched the video once and while doing other things at that...) I saw a lot of Benediction and Manafont flying about during AV Chainspell or... something.
The obvious answer: Only use weapons your job lacks skill for. Lowest skills become highest, having no skill at all gives you 100% accuracy. That one guy that got intimidated non-frickin' stop? Yeah, every time you're intimidated, it kills AV's Regen for 3 minutes.
Also, everyone sub Ninja! Even S-E does it! (Rdm/nin, pld/nin, nin/nin... oh)
Also, I get all my information from reliable JP sources.
"And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be?"

Interesting - This is from JP sources? What was THEIR source? this vid?
Especially the bit about killing AV's regen for 3 mins....... ya think that might be important? O_o Dragon Killer effect?
I like the "Use unskilled weapons" theory - but there is something going on with the 2hrs.....
- The RDM/NINs weren't meleeing for damage. It was to give them a chance to Parry incoming attacks. You can't parry without being engaged in combat.
- They were using some sort of hate-bouncing between the tanks. Absolute Virtue hits so hard, so fast, no single tank can keep up. They're also using the safety-in-numbers technique against Aeroga IV. As with all -ga spells, you can spread the damage a little thinner by putting more targets in the way of the spell, which is why people weren't immediately dropping left and right from it.
- The intimidation effect seen in the video triggered from AV picking up the Dragoon trait Dragon Killer after activating Call Wyvern. The person that got intimidated was undoubtedly wearing a piece of Crimson abjuration armor, which turns you into a dragon for purposes of Dragon Killer checks.
- I count 26 participants in the battle logs. One of them (Astri) switched jobs from Black Mage against Jailer of Love, to Dragoon against Absolute Virtue.
I realize this, but I've never really understood why they're hitting it back, wouldn't they just be feeding it TP?
Probably not. To feed it TP first you'd need to hit, then you'd need to cause damage with the hit. Given a lack of Staff skill for RDMs versus AV the chance of those happening are pretty low.
The Rdm/Nin were upclose not so much as to parry attacks, but to cut the Aeroga spam damage numbers, reducing the damage done to the main tanks and resulting in less curing and hate loss. Sadly Demo didn't use this plan and there paladins were taking a good amount of Damage from the spam. Luckly there was 86 people there and had some outside healing support.
My linkshell has gathered some info from the first 3 attempts, we are going to try a few things out ourselves as well as demo is planning to take 3 more cracks at it today.
I'd engage with a 0 skill Earth Staff just to hear battle music >.> Seriously. An epic fight like that and you're gonna go the whole time listening to the mellow zone music?
Btw, a few pages back when I mentioned the 2 who wouldn't get the title -- I meant in regards to player application. If a player strategy were to require at least 20 people (or 26), since that's how many it took S-E and they built the frickin' thing... then it'll suck to be those lucky players sitting around in the back-up party.
"And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be?"
Eh, it's not like using more than 18 people isn't extremely common in other things. Vrtra, Kirin, other big fights generally involve swapping people out, or multiple parties to handle the spawns; at least back when I played.

Yep. It's not like you're only going to fight it once.
Took me a couple tries to get my title for Vrtra and Dynamis Lord back in the day, but a little patience and persistence definitely pays off.

Atleast Dynamis Lord and Av (once we figure it out) have drops worth spamming them for, the 18 player comment was used because the Dev team boasted they could kill him with exactly 18 players.
