Tamas or Rajas?

Well after a year or two of working on CoP missions, I have finally landed halfway through 8-3. All thats left is the BCNM, and then Promathia himself. Now, as far as job affiliation goes, I have almost always been a career mage. First RDM(Though I never took it past 40...) and now BLM(to 75[74 right now]).

First and foremost, I HATE the level grind. I have been playing this game foir 4+ years, and 74 BLM is my highest. I highly doubt I will ever take another job to 75, although I was looking at messing around with a few others, primarily SAM, somewhat interested in THF, SMN and RDM(Again), also displaying interest to COR, RNG and SCH.

Now, I know that for a mage, Tamas ring is nice to have. The - Enimity and +MP is beneficial to any job, and the advanced INT and MND stats are helpful. However, I also know that the STR and DEX provided by Rajas is much more benificial to melee then the INT and MND is to a mage, since you never use both stats at once.

Now what I am wondering is, should I pick Tamas because it is fully geared to my current job layout, or should I pick of Rajas just in case I decide to take a melee up?

Yea take the tamas ring. You can always drop it and redo last fight to get rajas in the future.

If you can for sure say that BLM, WHM, RDM, or SCH would be your 'main', go for Tamas, there's no buyable ring comparable. Same for Rajas if you would say that about any DD job.

That line ends the debate....take the Tamas. Why have a ring in your mog safe that you MIGHT use one day when you could be using one right now. If you do decide you get sick of being a mage one day and want to go through the grind again, throw the Tamas away and get a Rajas.

The answer for your case is fairly clear, and it's already been covered. So instead I'll lay out the case for each of the three rings:

If you're primarily a tank, BUT you also have DD jobs levelled and you play them regularly, get Rajas.. it's more useful.

If you're a Blue Mage get Rajas, unless you play other mage jobs a lot in which case you should get Tamas and use it as a gearswap.

For DDs - You're not going to find a much better choice of ring than Rajas, even among the stuff you can get as r/ex drops from HNMs and endgame stuff. RNG and COR should do their own thing, but Rajas is still pretty damn good.

For Mages - See above. Tamas is really one of the best you can get. If you're a SMN, a combo of Serket, Vivian, and/or Evokers is preferrable.

For Tanks - There are a LOT of good r/ex rings - Hercules Ring, Jelly Ring and Defending Ring (tough to get!) are probably better choices than Sattva if you're a PLD. If you're a NIN Sattva is awesome because it has both Emnity+ AND AGI+ and you can't ask for much better than that.

Get Rajas in case you ever want to melee lvl 30 with BLM or any other job.

Tamas' bonus can be obtained easily using equip macros and unless you really have no space at all it isnt worth it, as you never need the 3 bonus at the same time. But meleeing having str, dex and tp bonus at the same time from Rajas is priceless.

Then again if you are never going to melee (and your staff/club/scythe skill is zero) then go for tamas, but otherwise even as a BLM Rajas will give you way more benefits.

Aye, I made the error of picking Bushinomimi when I beat DM because I honestly thought I was going to pimp out my SAM in full and stick to it. Now, that may yet happen, but lately I'm finding myself wishing I'd done with the more unique Suppa.

As such, I swore I wouldn't make that mistake again in CoP and ToAU. I took Rajas and Bahlran's Rings, since both of those rings offer bonuses you simply can not get from other items for those slots.


OOC, how the hell did it take you this long to 74 BLM? The job can be soloed to 70+ in about a month or less if you're diligent. Besides, usually when people say they'll only play X job(s), at some point or another that falters.

I mean come on, you have 20 jobs to play with. Not saying you shouldn't make the effort to seriously pimp out your BLM, but IMO you're depriving yourself of a lot of potential fun and new experiences.


Long story short, take the Rajas unless you can say with 100% certainty that you will not put heavy focus on a melee job.

There's no point in getting something you won't use. Tamas is your ring unless you will be leveling non-mage job.

Should you change your mind about leveling another job, you can change the ring if you want to. Given the difficulty of setting up CoP runs, there'll always be someone who still needs it, so you should be able to find opportunity to change ring if you so desire.

When I got my ring, I was RDM75, PLD66 (or so), and BLM56 (still am... /sigh). I don't need the enmity- on RDM, and the INT/MND stats, while nice, are already covered by the rings I do have, more or less. Ended up with Sattva Ring, since PLD should be my next job to Lv.75 (now at Lv.70), and I'd like to return to NIN one day.

All three rings are nice, to be honest; you really can't go wrong if you use whichever you pick. Good luck with the remaining CoP fights. ^_^

Like others have said, people who say "I'll never level another job" end up eating their words more often than not. And if/when that happens, you'll feel like a sucker due to the combined allure of unique bonuses that can't be replaced by any ring and the grass always being greener on the other side. Plus, after the two-handed changes, it became even MORE useful to two-handed weapon users (I say more useful because the Store TP+5 already made it useful by allowing many two-handers to shave off an entire hit needed to reach 100 TP with a bit of help from Chiv. Chain and maybe Brutal Earring, weapon depending.)

Worst case scenario: You use it on BLM for the Subtle Blow ;P

I'll have to disagree with this. Why get a rajas now if his main job is 75 black mage? I'd rather have the best ring for my main job. The worst that can happen is that he tosses the tamas and gets a rajas later on in the game, if he ever decides to level up a melee job.

I'm gonna have to say take the Tamas now, and if sometime down the road, you feel like pimping out a melee job, you can always just toss said Tamas and get a Rajas instead. As has been said so many other times in this thread, now that you can change your ring choice later, there's no point in picking something you MIGHT use over something you WILL use.

(and for the record: Picked Tamas, haven't regretted it yet)

Alright, It looks like I'll be going Tamas. My highest melee is 19 THF, and if I do decide to level a melee I have 10+ levels to go back and redo the last fight, right?

I'd rather have the best ring for my main job.

It's only "the best ring" in that it saves you one pack slot. It doesn't let you do something you can't already do with gear you can buy.
