  • What's WoG like?

I haven't played this game in a while but I was just curious, cuz I haven't seen a lot of discussion about this, but what's WoG like so far? Do you actually get to go to the past of a place, such as, for ex: Saruabaruta? And actually walk around and seeing some slightly different terrain? And even have free will to go back into time? ....or is it all just cutscenes of thee past

Yes, yes (well terrain doesn't change in 20 years, but structures do), yes, no.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

Currently there's 18 totally open zones, 15 of which are past versions of modern zones with slightly different monsters, terrain and visuals to the point they're still recognizable, but still look very different.

At any time, any of these zones, including the home Cities if they do not control the neighboring zone, can break out in an open combat system known as Campaign, where Beastmen horades will attack a fortification and you will need to defend it. The battles work like Dynamis or Besiege where anyone can engage any monster involved regardless of claim. To aid in your defense, or offense, of these zones are NPC troops from the nation closest to the region.

To travel back and forth between past and present, you can use any of nine "Cavernous Maws" large gates found in specific zones. Working similarly to Runic Portals, you must travel to one in the past and use it to send you to the present in order to activate it. But once active it becomes a two way gate that can be used at any time.

Currently, there is very little in terms of missions or quests, as well as obtainable gear. But Campaign and Campaign Ops (mini-missions and quests you can do to gain exp and increase your standing in your nation of choice) provide strong reasons to spend long amounts of time in this world. Campaign battles have quickly become an easy, safe, near-reliable way to gain EXP, even solo, at almost any level.

Tell that to Gustaberg...seriously, you could never tell that ramp was there in the present.

        Re: What's WoG like?

The past is fully explorable (at least the areas we have access to). Overall there are 9 Maws that transport you back to the past. Currently each nation has 5 areas associated with it. ie: Southern San D'Oria, East Rounfaure, Jugner Forest, Vunkler Inlet and Batallia Downs. The Inlet along with Grauberg and Fort Karugo-Narugo are completely new areas. The other areas that correspond to modern counterparts are mostly the same with some drastic geographical and zoning changes. Once you get all of the maws unlocked, it's easy to go from city and city and place to place.

If you enjoy the various city mission lines from the 'original' game, then you'll love WotG as a lot of the NPCs are present in the past in younger versions ie: Excenmille and Maat etc. It's also cool to see modern day NMs roaming around during Campaign battles. Campaign is a mix of Beseiged and Garrison with some decent xp rewards. It's pretty easy to get into, especially if you're high level.

It's nowhere near fleshed out so far but the expansion has some tremendous potential. It's a great time killer now, especially for solo activity.

And the best part about Campaign is you can get good exp while going LFP instead of having to wait hours doing nothing.

Almost any level? I've been going as WHM75 to Jugner, and the mobs in the battles hit hard enough that I couldn't see going as all that much less than that. Are the mobs in the zones adjoining the cities sufficiently weaker as to allow a level 20, 30, or 40?

Well, it's mainly dependent on the attacking division of Beastmen, as they all seem to be at different levels and difficulties. Unfortunatly, I only know about the Quadavs army, but of that I know that Bho'Mo the Venomtail's troop of Blm is one of the weaker groups while Di'Dha's troop is much stronger. There's also the Kindred's Shadow Forces to worry about, as they will always but up a much bigger fight.

But regardless of that, I've had friends take lvl 40-ish curing jobs and gain about 400-500 exp while I regularly do them as a 65 thf and net anywhere from 400-1200 (I die a lot, I have a bad habit of kiting mobs away from the forts).

I tend to kite things myself, but usually before they even make it there ... I toss a spell at the inbound ones, and half a dozen come after me. After that, I tend to run laps for a bit...

If you're interested in surviving, let the mobs commit to another target first (i.e., link to hell and back again on someone else ), then start maintaining a Repose on one or two of them. Find a melee or three that's taking damage and cure them, but make sure every 80s you're ready (stoneskin, blink, etc.) to recast repose on that mob you slept a while back. If you go /SCH, Celerity (half casting time) can help if you get caught off guard. You shouldn't really need /BLM's Elemental Seal - I can get unresisted Reposes in Meri. Mts. about 95% of the time as WHM62/SCH. One word of warning: that mob isn't going to be happy with you when the melees start whacking at it. Stay still and cure yourself if needed - running away will merely ensure the mob never shifts hate off of you.

The above strategy usually nets me about 700 on the shorter fights, 12-1500 on the longer ones in Meriphataud Mountains.

BTW, has anyone tried sleeping those damn scorps?

The only real problem with sleeping mobs is it seems to be a signal to the melee to target that one next ... if only they noticed that mob isn't going to be bothering anybody for a while and took out another.

                        '

They see a claimed monster, and think "Hey, someone is already killing that one, so it won't attack me!" Well, they're right about the not attacking them part...

I do the same thing myself, though as a Thf I really don't have many reliable ways to sleep things. Once friendly NPCs start popping, I'll make sure to kite right through them, as they'll eventually pull off and take out any mobs I'm kiting, or at least whittle away at them while they're chasing me.

But then again, that might not be the best way to get EXP, but at least it keeps them from chopping down the castle.
